Windows 10 update crashes my computer

I ran this computer just fine fine for several years, including a long while after I installed Windows 10 as suggested.  I had very few problems at all until last fall.  Then Windows 10 auto-updates started crashing my computer.  I have spent countless hours researching & testing things, running all the troubleshooters, running diagnostics.  I've tried so many things to stop this over the past 6 months, & now I'm afraid I'm screwed.   After every update I can recall since last fall (2017), The computer booted up just fine & appeared to be perfectly fine.  I could open & run any program just fine.  No troubles.  But, 3-10 minutes into using the computer, whatever I clicked on next would not work.  There would be no response at all.  I could still click on some things, but others wouldn't respond.  Gradually, if I continued to try to click on things, they would all not respond & the computer would completely freeze.  I would reboot & it would happen over and over until I gave up & started trying to solve the problem by troubleshooting & reading blogs...anything I could do to solve it.  Every time, which by now has been about 15, I would wind up having to revert to an earlier build.  Once I did that, everything worked perfectly.....until Windows 10 forced another update.  Then it all started over again.  Two weeks ago, an update happened, & I reverted back, but then it did it again 2 days later.  Then again the next day.  I reached Microsoft support on the phone, but they just said: "your computer is not compatible.  Our developers can't know all the old drivers out there, so we can't help you".  I asked if they would help me just turn off the auto updates, which I used to be able to do.  He said No.  My computer is a Gateway FX6840, Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU   870 @ 2.93GHz, 4.00 GB RAM, 64-bit Operating System, x64-based processor.  Yesterday, the PC updated again, but this time they have removed the ability for me to revert back to a previous working version.  I'm hoping I'm not screwed, because I have several cryptocurrency nodes (not bitcoin, no I'm not rich) that have wallets on them & I'd prefer not to rebuild all of that if I can avoid it.  Nor do I want to re-install the many programs I have loaded with all my settings and custom menus, addons, etc. in place by doing a clean install.  I don't have alot of money, so the little I have, I'd like to not lose or have to build back from scratch.

Is there anybody out there who can help me, or point me in the right direction?  I'm leary of those support companies that want a fee, then pipe in and take over doing God knows what to my computer.  

Thanks in advance for your help.  Signed 52 year old dude who built his 1st PC from scratch in 1990, but is lost with this new stuff.

    Yeah! Everybody has the same problem. [Do not want to sound mean.] But the problem is Microsoft updates do not work well for many machines, and Microsoft's answer to that is "START OVER." In other words, delete all of your work [you should have backed up] and take hours to reinstall [or pay $$$ to a tech to do it.] Or just buy something new. Microsoft sells to MILLIONS of end users who have working systems and do not complain. That is their only interest. Not the many people who have failing installations.

    Now that Microsoft has decided to FORCE updates and upgrades, end users will be forced to use drastic measures to fix simple problems.

    Here are some things that will help you prevent [NOT FIX] the problems. Get Pro or Enterprise editions of anything. If the word "Home" is in the title, do not buy it. Buy from a business sales department, like Dell Business or HP Business computers [or others, just an example] with hardware and software warranties. Yes, it will cost more up front, but it will give you someone to scream at when the problems arise. I never buy a machine that does not have at least a three year warranty. Next, you should have a backup program that backups files to the cloud or external drive and also does a backup image to an external drive on a regular basis. [Storagecraft, Easeus, Macrium Reflect and many others][Macrium has a free version for home users, I believe.]

    An alternative is to get a Chromebook or such.

    A better, but more expensive, alternative is to get an Apple.

    The best answer would be if Microsoft fixed their system; and did not force updates or upgrades.

    Note: Why do Apple updates and upgrades work so much better that Microsoft's? Because they control the hardware. Microsoft does not control the hardware, so their updates will, many times, not play well with your hardware; especially if you have changed hardware since the last update. [Same for much of the software.]

    I have got the same problem. I bought a brand new PC in May with SSD, after couple of weeks Windows 10 updated and PC crashed straightaway. I rebooted and last Friday it crashed again. I use my PC for work and I feel baffled. The update is automatic. Apparently, there are no solutions for this problem. The PC technical assistance is saying that Microsoft Operative system 10 is messing around and I should never update my PC. This sounds like a  joke.   Anyone can tell me, does it happen with all PCs? How can I fix the situation? Will Microsoft help me or I should forget about it?

    So, I followed the instructions.

    When it did not work, but merely told me that the current version of windows on my PC is invalid - which is odd, as it was supplied and updated by Microsoft AND was legal and paid for - I went out and purchased a new HDD so as to do an install on virgin media, as it were.

    I stopped playing on the first day at the 21st iteration of:

    Starting setup

    Restart PC

    Starting setup

    Restart PC

    . . .

    Then, thinking I might have made a mistake in creating the media, I did it again, verry slowly and very carefully and, GUESS WHAT!>!?!?

    ABSOLUTELY NOTHING CHANGED.

    I still have a dead PC, with no working OS

    No access to my data and software

    AND . . .an OS supplier which hides behind lawyers and suggests that the solution to its utter incompetence is for me to purchase a new machine  to replace the 2 year old machine tht worked perfectly until attacked by the virus which is Microsoft forced updates.
