Windows 10 Media Creation Tool Error: 0x80042405 - 0xA001A

Greetings,

Recently, I have seen many people inquiring about this error regarding the Media Creation Tool. I myself got this error when I try to create a bootable USB drive (aka Create an Installable Media).

Here's what I tried:

Reformatting USB drive to FAT32

Deleting files

Tried to locate and run Setupprep.exe (I couldn't find this file in C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources or anywhere)

Change Startup Type of Update-Related Services (Startup Type: Manual -> Automatic)

Uninstalled and Reinstall Windows 10 Media Creation Tool

Made sure my USB is above 8Gb as instructed by the tool (it is 15Gb)

The Fix (for me at least):

1. Downloadthe Windows 10 Media Creation Tool directlyinto the USB drive that you want to use as a bootable device (meaning you download the Tool into the same USB you chose to use as an Installation Media). If you already downloaded the tool on your PC's Desktop, copy it into your USB.

2. Run the Tool directly from your USB, meaning you open File Explorer, locate the MediaCreationTool.exe in your USB and double-click to run it.

The installer should then create an Installation Media/Bootable USB.

    I have the same issue - tried downloading the tool - copying it to USB - running it from there & STILL GET SAME ERROR - why is Microsoft so lame in fixing this. My PC supplier didn't include the WIN 10 DVD so I'm trying to create one.

    OK tried this:

    Requested the ISO option & downloaded it

    ran pgm ISO to USB converter to the USB drive - it finished & it verified it =OK

    Rebooted and changed to boot from USB

    Got "Selected boot device failed"

    Is this any different than you did, LisaMullen?

    What else is there - planning to try calling Microsoft tomorrow.

    The media creation tool worked intermittently for me, more often it failed using different memory sticks or SD cards formatted to FAT32 but occasionally it worked. I tried the NTFS format and it worked first time. It seems that data is being corrupted for some obscure reason before or after it is copied onto a USB stick.

    Another  possible  workaround for everyone is to download the .ISO file into the PC and then put it onto the USB stick with 3rd party software. But even then the download data might get corrupted so who knows if that will always work.

    I would also try these two measures:

    1. Try using a different USB flash drive. Different brands and models of flash drives have varying degrees of compatibility with different computers and software. Sandisk USB flash drives for instance have a reputation of not be universally compatible, though the company makes some of the fastest flash drives available.
    2. Try using diskpart with the "clean" option to remove any metadata that may be interfering with the process. Then reformat the drive.
