I did it both ways twice. From the desktop and from the USB. neither option worked for me.
Windows 10 Media Creation Tool Error: 0x80042405 - 0xA001A
Greetings,
Recently, I have seen many people inquiring about this error regarding the Media Creation Tool. I myself got this error when I try to create a bootable USB drive (aka Create an Installable Media).
Here's what I tried:
Reformatting USB drive to FAT32
Deleting files
Tried to locate and run Setupprep.exe (I couldn't find this file in C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources or anywhere)
Change Startup Type of Update-Related Services (Startup Type: Manual -> Automatic)
Uninstalled and Reinstall Windows 10 Media Creation Tool
Made sure my USB is above 8Gb as instructed by the tool (it is 15Gb)
The Fix (for me at least):
1. Downloadthe Windows 10 Media Creation Tool directlyinto the USB drive that you want to use as a bootable device (meaning you download the Tool into the same USB you chose to use as an Installation Media). If you already downloaded the tool on your PC's Desktop, copy it into your USB.
2. Run the Tool directly from your USB, meaning you open File Explorer, locate the MediaCreationTool.exe in your USB and double-click to run it.
The installer should then create an Installation Media/Bootable USB.
Hope this helps!
Cheers,
Tom

2018-07-13T13:34:53+00:00 Yes, this is a method that works well and already has been suggested by a number of people in this thread I believe. The other work around that works for most is downloading the tool itself, moving it to the flash drive running it from there.
What we are grappling with is why it doesn't work like it's supposed to. It has been broken off and on like this but has also worked as intended at other times.

2018-07-13T06:07:44+00:00 Here's the real solution:
Don't use the Media Creation Tool to put the files on your USB drive; use it to download the ISO.
Then download Rufus. (https://rufus.akeo.ie/)
Once you have the ISO downloaded, run Rufus.
In Rufus, select your device and the ISO file.
(I used NTFS file system with default cluster size for the format options.)
Click Start and let it do it's thing. (Took about 20 minutes for me.)
That's it. You should be good to go.
I tried doing this USB thing in the Media Creation Tool an obscene amount of times; I did probably everything mentioned in this thread (different file systems, formatting, changed service settings, etc). Nothing worked. Still kept getting the error. Then I just downloaded the ISO and used Rufus to put it on my flash drive. Worked perfectly on the first attempt.
I hope this helps someone...

2018-07-12T14:03:10+00:00 There seem to be several work arounds for the problem building a viable installer using the Media Creation tool. Downloading the Media Creation Tool, moving the file it directly to the flash drive and then executing it from the flash drive seems to work for most people. Have you tried that?
Another option is using the online Media Creations Tool's option to download the Windows 10 OS ISO to your computer. Next, with the flash drive inserted in a USB port, download and install a free tool called Rufus. Open Rufus and tell it where the ISO is downloaded to on your computer. Then let Rufus build the installer for you.
No need to buy a third part fix for this issue. How much did you pay for that software that didn't work? If you don't mind me asking, that is.
Hope this helps,
Steve Trent

2018-07-12T07:19:56+00:00 A week ago, after the information on the official website of Windows https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows\_10-windows\_install/windows-10-media-creation-tool-error-0x80042405/f453c643-419b-4342-943d-e4b204644e9a I purchased software ErrirFix Kit which unfortunately does not solve the problem, I requested a refund, unfortunately to this day I have no response from the owner of the software.
