Windows 10 Media Creation Tool Error: 0x80042405 - 0xA001A

Greetings,

Recently, I have seen many people inquiring about this error regarding the Media Creation Tool. I myself got this error when I try to create a bootable USB drive (aka Create an Installable Media).

Here's what I tried:

Reformatting USB drive to FAT32

Deleting files

Tried to locate and run Setupprep.exe (I couldn't find this file in C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources or anywhere)

Change Startup Type of Update-Related Services (Startup Type: Manual -> Automatic)

Uninstalled and Reinstall Windows 10 Media Creation Tool

Made sure my USB is above 8Gb as instructed by the tool (it is 15Gb)

The Fix (for me at least):

1. Downloadthe Windows 10 Media Creation Tool directlyinto the USB drive that you want to use as a bootable device (meaning you download the Tool into the same USB you chose to use as an Installation Media). If you already downloaded the tool on your PC's Desktop, copy it into your USB.

2. Run the Tool directly from your USB, meaning you open File Explorer, locate the MediaCreationTool.exe in your USB and double-click to run it.

The installer should then create an Installation Media/Bootable USB.

    Did not work (solution below)

    • I tried formatting to NTFS
    • I tried moving media tool directly to USB (which is odd)
    • I tried all this while running as admin.

    What ended up working.

    • Format USB stick to NTFS using disk management long format (NOT quick format - this takes a long time)
    • Run as media tool as admin. (doesn't matter if its directly on USB or not)

    An easier fix would be:

    1. Right click on the tool you downloaded called: mediacreationtool.exe

    2. Click Properties

    3. Click on the tab: Compatibility

    4. Check the box that says: Run this program in compatibility mode for:

    5. Select "Windows 8" from the Drop Down Menu

    6. Check the box that says: Run this program as Administrator

    7. Click the "Apply" button

    8. Click the "OK" button

    9. Run the mediacreationtool.exe program again.

    This should work just as well.

    Logged in just to confirm that moving the creation tool to the target USB drive was a workable solution, at least in my situation.

    (Totally against all logic, but hey, if it works)

    This also worked for me (after reformatting the USB to FAT32 and copying the creation tool to the USB's root).

    Pozdravy,

    Nedávno jsem viděl mnoho lidí, kteří se touto chybou dotazovali ohledně nástrojů pro tvorbu médií. Já sám jsem dostal tuto chybu, když se snažím vytvořit zaváděcí USB disk (aka Vytvořit instalační médium).

    Zde je, co jsem zkoušel:

    Přeformátování jednotek USB na FAT32

    Smazání souborů

    Pokusil (a) najít a spustit Setupprep.exe (Nelze najít tento soubor v C: \ $ Windows. ~ BT \ Zdroje nebo kdekoli)

    Změnit typ spouštění služeb souvisejících s aktualizací (Spouštění typu: Ruční -> Automatické)

    Odinstalace a reinstalace nástrojů Windows Media Creation Tool

    Ujistěte se, že můj USB je nad 8Gb podle pokynů nástroje (je 15Gb)

    Fix(nejméně pro mě):

    1.  Stáhnětenástroj nástroje Windows 10 Media Creation Tool přímodo jednotky USB , který chcete použít jako zaváděcí zařízení(což znamená, že si stáhnete nástroj do stejného USB, který jste si zvolili jako instalační médium). Pokud jste již tento nástroj stáhli na pracovní plochu svého počítače, kopírujte jej do svého USB.

    2.  Spusťte nástroj přímo z vašeho zařízení USB, což znamená, že chceteotevřít soubory aplikace WindowsExplorer , vyhledejte aplikaci MediaCreationTool.exe na počítači USB a poklepejte na jeho spuštění.

    Instalační program by měl vytvořit instalační médium / zaváděcí USB.
