Is it possible to uninstall the Windows 10 update assistant? When i delete it it just automaticly reinstalls itself when i start the pc again

Can't speak for anyone else but for me this did not work - despite trying it three times.   Perhaps no-one here is old enough to recall the repellant 'thing' which appeared from John Hurt's chest in the original version of Ridley Scott's Alien, but that seems to me to be exactly what the Windows 10 Update Assistant has become.  It is a monster: an alien, destructive and sinister interloper which it appears utterly impossisble to deter or remove.  Please everyone, there must surely be some answer, somewhere - or must we all be forever haunted like poor Sigourney Weaver and hern dooomed spacecraft ..... ?

This is ludicrous!!   I do not wish my application of Windows to be 'updated' at the moment.  Why, therefore, can I not delete the relevant program?  Sorry to be vulgar, but who the hell owns my computer: me or Microsoft?  I do not expect Renault to tell me how to manage my car or Bosch my dishwasher so why should the maker of the operating systrem on my computer presume to tell me what I may or may not do with it?  Or, worse, foist its products on me when I have not asked for the them or in ways that make them 'unrefusable'?  This is all some kind of technological dictatorship in which the user has no role and no say.

I had this exact problem for the longest time. I was able to fix it with the task scheduler solution, but since that's not working for you, here's a janky fix that will totally prevent it from running, it's what I've been using the last several months.

1. Right click on your desktop, select new -> text document. Open the text document.

2.  The following script continuously executes commands that will terminate Windows Update Assistant whenever it attempts to start. Copy and paste the following script into the text document:

@echo off

:Loop

taskkill /im Windows10UpgraderApp.exe /f

taskkill /im SetupHost.exe /f

goto Loop

3. Go to File -> save as...
4. Change the file name to Windows Update Killer.bat (The file name doesn't matter as long as the extension is .bat) -> select "Save as type:" -> select "all files"
5. Save the file.

After doing this, an executable file will appear on your desktop. Run the file as an administrator. A command prompt window will appear. Closing the window will terminate the script, so just keep it running and you'll never see Windows Update Assistant ever again.

Z I'm with you 100%.  I'm experiencing the same problem, feelings, all of it.  This really has to STOP!!!!!!  Someone fix this!

I terminated the update process of my laptop with the help of a friend who gave me a bat file that enabled me to use GPEdit.

Home Users, you need to run this to get GPEdit: (pastebin) (Or use compacted source below, and save it as "gpeditinstall.bat")

After Home users have DLed and run the bat file above, pro users should already have it without needing the bat file, the next steps are below.

Within GPEdit, you will need to find Windows Update; (run by running "gpedit.msc")

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update

Disable the option "Configure automatic updates", is what I did here.

Next, you need to access your task scheduler;

Should be simple as typing it up in your start menu.  I deleted Cortana so I don't know if the Cortana start menu will do it.

In Task scheduler, open the folders; Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows

At the bottom, you'll see two, WindowsUpdate, and UpdateOrchestrator.

For me, I disabled all within these folders, but today I saw that a few were enabled again, so you may need to take stronger actions if they keep coming back, such as editing each schedule you wish to disable and edit each individual trigger to uncheck "enabled".

Lastly, you'll need to go to services, and set Windows Update service, to disabled, and then stop it.  Some of these things may require a reboot after.

Windows will never again check for updates after all this is done, you might be able to manually get updates, if you enable the service again, and run the update tool, but it won't auto check after this.  However, because Microsoft is king of shoving things down your throat that you don't want, if you do perform an update, they may patch all these things and fix all the settings you altered because Microsoft enjoy taking total control of your machine without your consent so that they can tell you how you're allowed to use your machine.

In my case, Microsoft destroyed my partition format, so I can no longer update even though I want to.  I'm stuck with my final updates being November 2016, because MS damaged my partitions by changing them from GPT to MBR and caused some sort of UEFI issue in the process when I ran the Windows 10 repair disk one time to repair partitions after a cloning process went slightly wrong, so all the Windows 10 update assistant does for me is pop up EVERY SIX HOURS to tell me "We can't update because UEFI stuff".  Rather annoying.

If any MS employees see this, I wish to say;

You really need to think long and hard about the future of this company, because this company is becoming dictator like, and forcing users to do things they don't want, giving us no choice, and making lots of bad decisions.  Stop copying Apple and return Windows to the way it used to be, where users were allowed to do whatever they wanted and use their system the way they wanted.  I know you get lots of calls because idiots disabled some super important thing, but there are ways to stop this without taking away our control.  Unfortunately I've sent my thoughts in in the past and got ignored so, I guess it doesn't matter because MS generally thinks of us all as peons.  Slowly sound out that word and you'll really figure out what you (MS) are really doing to us.

So I've been plagued by the Windows 10 Update Assistant too. It comes up every time I log on to my laptop. My problem is that the update to 1703 is not compatible with any of my peripherals and I have a stable build that works the way I want it to. So, when I first got the update in November 2017 I ended up rolling it back. Not a problem until January 2018 when Microsoft decided to force the update on my computer. I logged on and it was most of the way through installing the update. Still didn't work with my peripherals. I rolled it back again. At first the update tried to install every time I logged on and I would have to stop it. Then it switched to an Update Assistant screen which allowed me to chose a "remind me" box. I used cccleaner to get rid of it. I have to do this several times a day. I keep uninstalling it and it comes back. So your solution above looked great EXCEPT... double-clicking or right clicking on any of the triggers does NOTHING so I cannot disable them. WTF Microsoft. I realize that there is a real security threat out there but I sincerely doubt that most home users are a target. I am the sole user and administrator of my laptop and I want to choose what is or is not installed on it. I use a tight security protocol as well. I am a university professor and I count on my laptop to keep my course and projects running. I wish Microsoft would F off with this stuff and give users like me control over what happens to their personal property. I consider this a real invasion of my property. Ther. Rant over.

The Update Assistant in Windows 10 cannot be uninstalled, but you can get rid of it

Click your Start Button, type Task Scheduler and hit enter

In the left Pane, navigate to: Windows - Update Orchestrater

Right Pane double click 'Update Assistant'

Click on Triggers Tab

On each of the triggers ( At login . . . etc.) double click and uncheck 'Enabled'

Under 'Update Assistant, there is another event 'Update Assistant CalendarRun'

Do the same for all triggers on that event

Restart your system, that's It!
