Windows 10 Won't Start so I "chkdsk" now OMG

When I first turned to Mic. Sup. about my problem and read several with simular problems accept mine was far worst. I couldn't even get past my password to sign in. It dragged and ran so slow. It was several minutes in between each letter of my password. Or it would just freeze there at the sign in screen. Had no way to shut it down accept for a hard shut down with the power button. It was running fine before with no sign of any problem. I went to start it up. It struggled a little at first. I would get a window saying Windows needed to gather some information and will need to restart. Or something to that effect. I was on for just seconds and saw it only twice cause it got worse from there.

I went with the suggestion to F11 on start up and at the Command prompt ran chkdsk c: /r /x. What I got was over 430,000 corrupted files with an attempt to fix each one. But for each one there was an error occurred c0000185 with "The disk does not have enough space to replace bad clusters." All 430,000 files. That took several hours. But now Its at stage 5 of the process "Looking for bad free clusters" and froze at that point and has not gone any further. I read someone had the same problem at stage 5 and he had to do a hard shut down and completely caused himself far worst problems. I'm leaving it where its at and hoping someone will help me soon.

Hi Robert,

Usually, Error code 0XC1900101 happens when a security application blocks the installation of an update. These security applications are but is not limited to anti-virus softwares, proxy applications, and 3rd party firewalls. A driver of an unnecessary hardware could also prevent the installation of an update. To troubleshoot this issue, we recommend disabling all your security applications temporarily. Removing all unnecessary hardwares before updating is also required. As much as possible, only connect the keyboard and mouse on your PC. After meeting all these conditions, kindly try updating your PC again.

I don't want to give up on this, I at least want to see the system reach a working state.

My recommendation to users going forward is not to pounce on every new Windows 10 Feature Update that is released. If your system has been working just fine with the current version, wait it out a while or skip it all together. If there is some specific feature in the update you want, then thats an exception, but these feature updates are becoming more difficult to install on older devices; and it sometimes makes you wonder if the inconvenience is worth the hassle just to keep doing the same thing.

If you look at whats considered the flagship features of Windows 10 1709, they are aimed at newer generation devices like the new Surface Book 2. Otherwise welcome features like Story Remix, which you have to upgrade to 1709 to get, could be supplanted with third party alternatives.

Andre I sure your not up and about at this time of night but I just needed to leave a note that already there was a snag. The first start of Custom install, Booting in BIOS, was a no go. Unsuccessful. It would not start boot to setup for USB drive. Most of the attempts would continue through to the password screen. Some attempts would get me to the black screen with all the info and the "press (Esc) to continue." Some would give me "press any key to continue past hard drive check". I did allow it once and it did a "checking and repairing files..." thing and it ended with could not...?.. complete... you will need to restart to continue.....?... Sorry I couldn't remember. I am confident that I did this correctly but unsuccessful. Ill continue with the other options from here and let you know. If your thinking what I'm thinking then your thinking "not a good sign". Hope you had a good nights.

Operating systems like Windows 10 are so complex, anything from a flawed driver, to a buggy app or application can cause a system failure.

Yes sir. I went back through it a little more and saw where I needed option A instead of option Z. So I think I've got a good handle on it now. I was a little overwhelmed for a while with all the provided info. I found it all very interesting and I can say that I have been educated that much more in this area. I am going to wait till tonight at work to start this so I will let you know with an update in the morning. I am worried about the condition of my C: drive. I still don't know what cause over 430,000 files to corrupt from....nowhere. Literary overnight. I got back on it the next day and that's all she had. If you have any thoughts on this let me know. I sure don't want this to happen again.
