Display Driver has suddenly defaulted to Microsoft Basic Graphics Driver

Hi All

My 7 year old Dell XPS Studio laptop, which has been running Win 10 nicely for the last couple of years, has now changed my ATi Radeon HD 3560 driver to the Microsoft Basic Graphics Driver, presumably after a Win update.

Consequently, my screen resolution is not correct. There is no option of changing the screen resolution back to the previous setting, as it is no longer there.

I now can't revert back to the previous graphics driver (no rollback option, no system restore option, and no way of downloading the discontinued Ati drivers)

I have tried uninstalling the display driver through Device Manager and scanning for hardware changes, but no luck there.

Windows update says I have the latest driver.

Uninstalling the previous windows update has no effect either.

The display was running correctly previously , but the basic Microsoft driver has now taken over.

Would anyone have any ideas, short of reinstalling Windows again?

Thank You

Another user reported using Windows 8 catalyst driver worked for them. Just a thought.

My Dell desktop is 9 years old, but the HD5600 series card inside is 'only' 5 years old. AMD dropped support for my card years ago, but the last available driver from AMD works well with Windows 10 (for now.)

Microsoft's generic display driver is newer than my old AMD driver, so it makes sense that Windows Update will attempt to install it at some point. But I want to make sure that I keep the old AMD driver, so I ran Microsoft's tool to prevent specified drivers from being re-installed. I've never had a problem with my AMD driver.

    Ann,

You didn't say whether you tried rolling back the generic driver.

Try rolling back the driver update in the following manner.

Right click Start Menu>right click  Device Manager>Expand Display Adapter>Right click YOUR display adapter>right click Properties>left click Driver TAB at top> Rollback Driver>Answer questions why...say experiencing display distortions.

See if that resolves your resolution irregularities.  Check back with progress.

    Regards

    ,

    Wayne
