USB Dongle is broken - need replacement for Microsoft Sculpt Wireless Ergonomic Mouse and Keyboard

I probably will go with the bluetooth option. And you're right, I am at a rather large university so we have a electronics store on campus that purchases in large amounts for a cheaper price. Funnily enough due to my confidence in Microsoft, I didn't think I would need a whole new set - just a quick request for a new dongle and I would ready again for the daily grind of writing. I will be popping into my uni's store now to see if they have the bluetooth option (or any bluetooth option).

As much as I adored my keyboard set I am going to stay far, far away with anything that carries a dongle, until I can insure it is replaceable.

Thanks again for your informative response. This thread continuing on is both great for exposure and heartbreaking for all the people staring at their lovely (yet useless) keyboard sets.

This will cost Microsoft some money, as well.  People who don't know that dongles are not interchangeable will purchase another set to get a dongle to replace their lost one, return the set for a refund, and find out that the dongle they removed from the new set doesn't work with their old set.

On the upside: there are some "opened-box" sets available from resellers on Ebay and Amazon.  Just make sure to check with the seller that they have their native dongle, and it has been tested.  You should be able to find a perfectly functioning keyboard set for half of the original cost.  I know - I'm typing on one now.

You have to purchase a whole new set. According to Microsoft, there is absolutely no way to get a replacement dongle.

The argumentation imposed by Microsoft is: dongle-keyboard pair is unique. You lost your ~$5 dongle? Throw away your ~$95 keyboard and purchase a new ~$100 set. Meanwhile, some people here will advise you to spend some more time waiting on customer support calls just to get informed that besides the option to spend ~$100 on a new set, you can also spend ~$60 on a wired keyboard or ~$120 on a Microsoft Surface ergonomic keyboard that connects through Bluetooth.
