Windows 10 update asks to uninstall Avira AntiVir (which I don't have)

Hello everyone,

a few days ago I tried to update my Windows 10 installation. My computer tried many times to upgrade the OS, but after the first reboot, it was keeping rebooting constantly, and after the 4th reboot Windows automatically recovered the previous state, saying that the upgrade failed.

Googling for a solution, I have found out that a bug in the updater affected several thousands of devices, and I have installed the bugfix from the knowledge base.

Now, there is an additional issue bothering my Windows. When I start the upgrade procedure, it asks to uninstall Avira AntiVir because it's not compatible with the upgrade. I would do that, but I have never installed Avira AntiVir in my life. I tried to search in the disk and in the registry with the keywords "Avira" and "AntiVir", but I don't get any result. Indeed, I have never downloaded not even the installer of that software.

The upgrade can't proceed, the only thing I can do is to cancel it.

Any suggestions?

Solved (for me):  I had the same issue, the Win 10 install/upgrade kept asking me to manually uninstall "Avira", and another item "BDrom driver".  Like Francesco Di Caprio, I had never installed Avira AntiVir, nor was there any evidence of that in the registry nor on my hard drive after doing a thorough search. Earlier in the installation process Windows asked me to uninstall UBCD4Win, which appears to have arrived preinstalled with the Dell computer. I unistalled that using the control panel. After uninstalling that, (now a second attempt to install Win-10) I started getting the repeated warnings about "Avira". I did a registry search and a file search for "Avira". Nothing.  I did a registry search for UBCD4Win and removed all entries containing that. There was LOTS of UBCD4Win stuff remaining that the uninstaller did not uninstall.  Also did a search on the hard drive, there was a subdirectory with tons of UBCD4Win utilities. I deleted all UBCD4Win directories and subdirectories.  Why lingering UBCD4Win files or registry entries trigger a warning about "Avira" is a mystery, it seems unconnected, but apparently it does.  Then I restarted the WIN-10 upgrade (third attempt). It worked.

    Its is disappointing that Windows 10 allows an intrusion like Avira, with no obvious way of removing it.

    I tried to remove it with the aid of a Microsoft consultant, but to no avail.

    I reached the same conclusion that the update is not worth the effort to get it.

    Perhaps I should migrate to Apple ?

    I have the same problem.

    I have deleted every place "avira" was mentioned in my registry but still same problem. If Windows is so good, why cannot it remove it when asked.

    I simply cannot find 'avira' ans like the other user, have never installed or even heard of it. How can I remove something I cannot find?

    Why can't Microsoft fix this problem?

    You may have to be in Safe Mode to delete the "avira" files.

    In order to get in to Safe Mode in Windows 10, it is not the procedure like other previous version of Windows. 

    I don't remember off my head how to boot up in Safe Mode, but googling it will give you the procedure.

    I found the best thing to do is not to update to ver. 1803. This latest version messed up a few things on my computer.

    I rolled my Windows 10 back to ver. 1709 and now everything is good like before this update.

    Hi,

    To identify the file(s) download and unzip the AppRPS.zip and run the appraiser.bat) referenced in the "Answer" by "Gino Des" in the following topic :

    The batch file should identify the file(s) and location(s) and let you enter a number to open the folder(s) where the file(s) are.

    Delete or move file(s) off the computer and try the upgrade again.
