PC crashing - BSOD Watchdog violation 1x133 (possibly nVidia issue)

Recently I have built a 3D rendering station for a client of mine. The machine runs, but crashes about once or twice a day with a BSOD (watchdog violation 1x133. Blue Screen View mentions either nvlddmkm.sys or ntoskrnl.exe as culprit.

Things I have tried so far:

  • Clean install Windows 10
  • Clean install Windows 7
  • DDU removal of graphics drivers
  • latest nVidia drivers
  • older nVidia drivers
  • extensive RAM testing

Specs:

  • Asus X99-WS 10G E
  • Intel 6850K
  • 7x Zotac 1080ti Blower Edition (transformed to water cooling)
  • 64GB RAM
  • Samsung 960 Pro 512GB (system drive)
  • 3x WD Red in RAID 0 (data drive)
  • 2x Cooler Master V1200 PSU
  • Custom EK watercooling loop
  • Obsidian 900D

Any help or insight on this issue would be greatly appreciated, as this issue now causes great delays in my client's workflow.

I almost feel better knowing there are other folks out there with similar issues. I tried the MSI utility tonight, now my computer is really screwed. It messed with all kinds of things but NOT BEFORE successfully running Battlefront II - janky but it didn't crash. Makes me feel much more confident that this is definitely a software issue. I just don't understand how this could happen overnight on its own though.

BTW - Zotac tech support? Complete ****. They basically reminded me my warranty was phucked with the installation of the Phanteks waterblocks. They didn't have anything to say about the drivers, granted they are written by Nvidia. Nonetheless, complete douchebags about their support.

Let me know if you come up with anything else and I'll do the same. Dual 2080ti NVLink users unite!!!! FIX OUR **** NVIDIA, WE DIDN'T SPEND 2800 DOLLARS IN HARDWARE TO CRAP OUT!

Off to try and format c: and start over.

FYI NVIDIA released new drivers today, ver. 417.71. I did a DDU uninstall of my previous drivers and installed the new ones. After installation, I did the MSI_util_v2 workaround to enable MSI only on my NVIDIA cards. After restarting the computer again, it appears that my RTX 2080 Ti works now (played 90 minutes of SOTTR with no crashes/BSODs so far, whereas before it would crash after 5 minutes or so).

I haven't tried SLI yet as I didn't want to get out ahead of myself, but for now I'm hoping this solves the issue. If not, I'll post again.

    Good luck everyone!

Congrats! I followed your play but with no luck. Very frustrating. Starting to believe maybe I got bad cards? I don't know. Really sucks though.

You try them separately or disable individually via the motherboard? I don't know about Zotac but for EVGA they will take returns/RMAs on their cards as long as you put the stock cooler back on the card, even if you installed aftermarket waterblocks before. Not sure how old they are either as I know the 2080 Ti had QC issues back when first released, but if they're from December or so, I would think the odds would be pretty low for both to be bad. I can't say for certain though.

Any friends' computers you could try to drop the cards into to test? I know it's harder with waterblocks already on...

    Good luck man!

Did you enable Windows Defender Application Guard?  Doe the crash happen when you are using VMWARE or other Virtual Machine products?
