Stop Windows 10 Update Assistant from running

I'm running Windows 10 1607 on a system that isn't compatible with version 1709. But Windows thinks it is compatible, and so every day it runs Windows 10 Update Assistant and tries to download a 5GB update that will inevitably fail to install if I let it run. (I've set up a metered connection to block this from automatically happening.) 

How do I completely block Windows 10 Update Assistant from running?

    Yes!! Thanks for asking. 

    The weird thing that persists is that there are a couple of Windows updates that download and successfully install on a regular basis. Like, the exact same ones each time. (KB4033631, KB4049411)

    But that's a separate issue, I believe.

    Thanks Greg! I'd actually already done both of those things. I'll let you know if the issue persists. It could be that I just have to click "Remind me later" every day until I get myself a new computer...

    First, uninstall the Upgrade Assistant.

    Open Control Panel > Programs and Features > Windows 10 Update Assistant

    Select it then click Uninstall

    Open C:\ drive

    Select the Windows10Upgrade folder

    Then delete it

    Hi Jennifer. I'm Greg, a volunteer installation specialist and 8 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

    After uninstalling the Upgrade Assistant and deleting it's folder from C, I would also immediately run the Hide Updates Tool to catch and hide the Version Upgrade before it starts installing again: http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/2/2/f2...

    If you cannot do this then the only way to block the Upgrade from reappearing is to set your connection as metered to stop Windows Updates:
