OK, well using the iso to install the upgrade did not help either. The upgrade failed with no indication of why, and my old version of windows 10 was restored.

Lots of research and I found a temporary solution. (I think)

My problem is that the update assistant is trying to upgrade me from 1607 to 1703. (It took a lot of research just to figure out this is what it's trying to do, the update assistant does not say what it is doing)

I noticed a post by Andre on the first page of this thread, which points to a site that tells if your computer is going to be compatible with 1703 (or other versions) or if it's too old.

My toshiba laptop is not on the list, therefore not compatible with the upgrade it's trying to perform. After weeks of trying dozens of so-called fixes.

So, how to stop the assistant from running every day? Again, a post by Andre gives a link to a way to stop (hide) an update

That tells you how to download a microsoft tool, it checks your update status, then gives you a list of updates to hide, 1703 was on the list when I did it, so I checked that off.

Hopefully now, the update assistant will not come on every day. Time will tell.

I must say though, the assistant should work better. There AT LEAST should be a cancel option on the page if it's not a convenient time to do it. When it goes though the whole downloading (using up my bandwidth when I need it for something else) and then installing for hours, then when the computer restarts it has the message that simply says it didn't work, that's frustrating. When it happens day after day with no clue as to how to stop it, that's a complete time waster.

Could there be an option to save the downloaded file so if we find a way to install it we don't have to go through the hours of downloading again?

Couldn't the update assistant tell you what it is trying to install?

If they KNOW that some computers are not compatible, they should list that as a possibility on the error notice.

So I'll see tomorrow and in the future if this upgrade stays hidden. I'll use 1607 version as long as i can, then I guess I'll have to downgrade to windows 7 or what? I can't afford a new laptop. :(

I use two notebooks. One notebook was purchased having Windows 8.1 installed, whereas the other had Windows 10 originally installed. For some reason, MS insisted that I should use Windows 10 in lieu of Windows 8.1. Incidentally, such offer for free was quite strange to me, but I upgraded my older notebook Windows 8.1... In the case of my other notebook, I did buy Windows 10. I repeat, I did BUY it! As Windows is a monopoly, MS does not care for its customers.

In both of them the updating process is time consuming and I am talking about very long hours. I keep on saying that MS team which developed Windows 10 is not qualified whatsoever. Windows XP was the best operational system ever, but MS has offered worser and worser Windows versions. Frankly speaking, Windows XP met with my necessities, but MS needed something to sell and launched further versions of it.

I look forward to seeing a competitor of MS.

I am having the same exact thing and it ran for over 8 hours just to download and the install took another hour. The error screen appeared and I ran the trouble shooter and it uninstalled them and then ran another 9 hours...and then poof like magic the MS Store app disappeared so now nothing works. I am so done with this nonsense...were this machine not a Christmas gift I would have wiped it an installed a different OS. I click for support and get into this area and this is like reading Japanese to me. WAY, WAY above my skill level. Please could anyone make this easy for a future senior of America and borderline retarded as well? I am now unable to download anything because the stupid Microsoft Store app is MIA. So now what am I supposed to do? I can't find it to download it nor do I have the discs as the Windows 10 OS came pre-installed...please, please can anyone help??

Well shoot, my hiding of the update did not work.

Still, every day, windows update assistant comes on and starts downloading the update, even though it is going to fail. My only option now is to use task manager to close it, but that only helps if I notice it. if i have stepped away from the computer, and it gets it downloaded before I notice it, when I go to shut down it makes me "update and shut down" and as stated before, it takes hours to restart and tell me it didn't work.

AGAIN I wish Microsoft would give me some way to stop this.

Can't afford another computer right now :(
