What I did was to uninstall it, reinstall it, uninstall it again and then do a disk cleanup and then manually remove the last remains of the programme directories. It hasn't reappeared since.
Your device needs the latest security updates...big time error.

Yesterday, I got the notification "Your device needs the latest security updates" and an update window that couldn't be closed, but could be minimized to the tray. It spent hours to reach 100%, so I left it running overnight. I get up this morning, it reappears, does the same thing again...but then "restoring your version of Windows" appears on the restart and now it's downloading again. Is anyone else struggling with this, because it seems seriously bugged and stuck in a viscous cycle.

2018-01-31T00:14:54+00:00 Windows 10 update is more serious than it appears to be. Actually, MS engineers are not capable to solve the updating problem they created themselves. For many years I have not updated Windows XP and MS never posed any threat to me using invasive pop-ups.
How do I disable it? I'm going to re-install Windows in a few days. I want to disable this Windows Update.

I've got good news for you.
I had the same problem as you do and it was driving me crazy. None of solutions written up hadn't helped.
Then, I finally managed to find an answer for the problem, written by some good guy.
So...
- Type "Task Scheduler" in the search bar next to the windows icon in the lower left corner. A window will pop up.
- On the left hand side, click Task Scheduler Library>Microsoft>Windows>UpdateOrchestrator. Once you click on "UpdateOrchestrator", you will see a list become populated in the center upper portion of the window.
- What you want to do at this point is DISABLE "UpdateAssistant" and "UpdateAssistantCalendarRun". You must disable also "****UpdateAssistantWakeupRun". Voila. Windows 10 Update Assistant will be dead forever and you are free to use your perfectly working as-is PC indefinitely without interruptions.
I think it should work for you to. Have fun using your reborn computer:D

I just did this. Let's see if it works. So far, none of the various solutions posted online have worked. All l have failed to stop the update loop. Thanks.
