OK, well using the iso to install the upgrade did not help either. The upgrade failed with no indication of why, and my old version of windows 10 was restored.

Lots of research and I found a temporary solution. (I think)

My problem is that the update assistant is trying to upgrade me from 1607 to 1703. (It took a lot of research just to figure out this is what it's trying to do, the update assistant does not say what it is doing)

I noticed a post by Andre on the first page of this thread, which points to a site that tells if your computer is going to be compatible with 1703 (or other versions) or if it's too old.

My toshiba laptop is not on the list, therefore not compatible with the upgrade it's trying to perform. After weeks of trying dozens of so-called fixes.

So, how to stop the assistant from running every day? Again, a post by Andre gives a link to a way to stop (hide) an update

That tells you how to download a microsoft tool, it checks your update status, then gives you a list of updates to hide, 1703 was on the list when I did it, so I checked that off.

Hopefully now, the update assistant will not come on every day. Time will tell.

I must say though, the assistant should work better. There AT LEAST should be a cancel option on the page if it's not a convenient time to do it. When it goes though the whole downloading (using up my bandwidth when I need it for something else) and then installing for hours, then when the computer restarts it has the message that simply says it didn't work, that's frustrating. When it happens day after day with no clue as to how to stop it, that's a complete time waster.

Could there be an option to save the downloaded file so if we find a way to install it we don't have to go through the hours of downloading again?

Couldn't the update assistant tell you what it is trying to install?

If they KNOW that some computers are not compatible, they should list that as a possibility on the error notice.

So I'll see tomorrow and in the future if this upgrade stays hidden. I'll use 1607 version as long as i can, then I guess I'll have to downgrade to windows 7 or what? I can't afford a new laptop. :(

I purchased one new Dell notebook a couple of months ago and the Windows 10 update nuisance striked again! It is impressive that MS keeps on launching new versions of Windows 10 containing bugs... Why not relaunching Windows XP instead of insisting on Windows 10? As a matter of fact, I suggest that the person in charge of Windows 10 must be more qualififed. It is clear to me he or she lacks the minimum qualifications for carrying out his or her job.

The files or data on your computer will be kept during an OS or a security update. In case a compatibility problem will arise, the update will not install and you will get a notification as to what went wrong why the update failed.

You may also create a restore point or a backup to protect your files so you can go back to an earlier point before the update was installed in case something happens. Please see these links for more information:

You say you downloaded the iso image of the update and manually installed it but is it just an update or does it re-install windows and delete all my programs etc?
