Your device needs the latest security updates...big time error.

Yesterday, I got the notification "Your device needs the latest security updates" and an update window that couldn't be closed, but could be minimized to the tray.  It spent hours to reach 100%, so I left it running overnight.  I get up this morning, it reappears, does the same thing again...but then "restoring your version of Windows" appears on the restart and now it's downloading again.  Is anyone else struggling with this, because it seems seriously bugged and stuck in a viscous cycle.

What I did was to uninstall it, reinstall it, uninstall it again and then do a disk cleanup and then manually remove the last remains of the programme directories.  It hasn't reappeared since.

    There is virtually no solution that works for this latest security updates download loop problem. I have spent the last 3 days reading possible solutions, but all have failed when I tried them. If anyone finds a solution that works to stop these constant Windows 10 latest updates downloads, please post it here. Thanks.

    In my opinion, keeping the latest version of Windows 10 is an option of its users and not something mandadory. If such option is risky, it is not the business of MS at all. Actually, MS should be worried about producing more secure softwares and NOT bugging users. Impositive pop-ups for updating Windows 10 are not the most intelligent attitude and must be rejected openly.  The problem of monopolies is that they impose their point-of-views.

    I managed to use group policy to deactivate all of the Update Assistants in our organization.  Now 1703 is coming down through normal Windows Update.

    I opened group policy using Run and then typed gpedit.msc, but when the window opened for Group Policy, I got an "x" in a red circle with the message: MMC could not create the snap-in. 

    Do you know how to fix this?

    I finally got around this by downloading the update as an iso to another computer on the network.   I then mounted the iso on the laptop in question , which did not have enough disk space to handle the size of the file.  I ran setup and got the thing to work.  I've now turned off the update service and hopefully I won't get bitten any more.  

    But we shouldn't have to do workarounds like this.  I'll say it again - Microsoft, you need to fix this.  We, the end users, need to be able to control when and or if we download and install updates, not you.  This is a critical bug in Windows that needs to addressed IMMEDIATELY!
