Personalized settings not responding after windows 10 updates

help please

Windows 10 updates have been installed on a HP elitebook 8460p.  When i reboot I am now stuck on the personalized settings not responding on a black screen.  I have tried many things to no avail.  The solutins thati have read have not been helpful.  Any thoughts?

    I had the same issue after the recent update. I restarted my computer from the sign in screen, and let it sit on the "Personalised Settings (Not Responding)" for a bit and it ended up fixing itself; it just took a while to fully load.

    Microsoft just "made" me update my computer when I turned it off last night and not "personalized settings" is keeping me from getting access to any webpage on mu computer for a LOOOONG time. What are they? zhow can I get my computer to turn on in a timely manner again? Do I have to have them?

    This answer is useless. How are we supposed to know which update you idiots screwed up our computers with when we can't see anything with a black screen? I can log on and that's all. My personal settings are not responding.

    The following steps worked for me ...

    1. ctrl-alt-del
    2. select Task Manager
    3. in Task Manager, select File then Run new task
    4. type "explorer" in the box next to "Open"
    5. click OK

    now you should get your desktop back, I'd wait a minute or two, then

    1. reboot
    2. logon

    steps 6 and 7 may be a little slower than usual

    1. desktop appears as normal

    Hello ShaneL, good instruction. I would also like to add I have had the same problem and my solution in addition to yours without doing the run new task is, to sign out. This tells Windows to reload profiles. Then choose your profile and the computer will load your profile desktop as normal. For some reason Windows does something wrong on the restart after an update and does not load the same user profile correctly. This has happened to me a few times in 2018 on my desktop PC with Windows 10 and up to date on all Windows 10 updates.
