Personalized settings not responding after windows 10 updates

Another way to stop updates is to put your Internet connection as metered under the settings. Then updates are not pushed thru to you.

That's impossible for me, I get a black screen with the message that personalized setting not responding. And that's it. The task mgr does not respond at all. Additionally, I have no access to anything. No start button, absolutely nothing on my screen/desktop other than that message. The only thing I can do is a hard reboot. Thx for trying. But it's not up to us to fix this crap, It's MICROSOFTS RESPONSIBILTY.  I have an IT degree and still have difficulties. This is ridiculous.

This is not a permanent solution but does stop auto updates.

1. You can do this using the Windows Update service. Via Control Panel > Administrative Tools, you can access Services.
2. In the Services window, scroll down to Windows Update and turn off the process.
3. To turn it off, right-click on the process, click on Properties and select Disabled.

at least until you get things sorted out. I had the same thing happen to me about the personalized settings, it did it the last update, I solved it, and now another update and it did it again.. Tried the task mgr, but it wouldn't come up either on the black screen. I just did a hard re-boot, and it did the same thing again but I just waited and personalized settings did load. But it still PISSES ME OFF that every time I get an update from Microsoft, I have to wait with baited breath if my system is going to work right if at all. That is totally unacceptable and I'm considering just dumping windows and going with LINUX which, pay attention MICROSOFT, is free. I am not a happy camper and take note of that Microsoft, I am not happy. That is how YOU lose customers and I'm not going to let your crap make ME lose clients. I'm pissed.

This is not a permanent fix but with my experience when getting this black screen with white text error all I do is Ctrl Alt Del and log off. After Log off Windows will restart and loads my desktop profile fine and Windows works fine.

The following steps worked for me ...

1. ctrl-alt-del
2. select Task Manager
3. in Task Manager, select File then Run new task
4. type "explorer" in the box next to "Open"
5. click OK

now you should get your desktop back, I'd wait a minute or two, then

6. reboot
7. logon

steps 6 and 7 may be a little slower than usual

8. desktop appears as normal

Hello ShaneL, good instruction. I would also like to add I have had the same problem and my solution in addition to yours without doing the run new task is, to sign out. This tells Windows to reload profiles. Then choose your profile and the computer will load your profile desktop as normal. For some reason Windows does something wrong on the restart after an update and does not load the same user profile correctly. This has happened to me a few times in 2018 on my desktop PC with Windows 10 and up to date on all Windows 10 updates.
