2018-03 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4088776) - Error 0x80070002

I have been struggling with this issue for well over a month, It first started with the "2018-02 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4090913)". Now its update Tuesday and this months cumulative update (KB4088776) is doing the exact same thing.

I have tried all 5 of the steps provided by microsofts here:                            (More than once)

Finally, I have done a clean install of windows 10 three times now in the past couple of weeks, to no prevail. 

After each fresh install. the exact same issue.

I am running Windows 10 Pro Education, Version 1709, build 16299.15.

After each install it seems to update no problem, but seems to only be an issue once I reactivate my Windows 10 Pro Activation key.

I gave up weeks ago, and was hoping my problem would simply be solved by the latest update, but that is not the case.

Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    I note that your machine is showing the "requires a restart" message even after it has been restarted.  I have been plagued be this symptom on my wife's Asus F50S laptop.

    Some background to help you understand why I did what I did.  The PC is set up with one administrative user and one regular user.  There is a utility,  SharePortPlus from D-Link, that is started automatically on logon, to allow wireless connection to our printer and sharing of the printer by any PC on the network.  Occasionally when switching from the one user to the other I would get the message "SharePort Utility is in use" when I did not expect it.  And sometimes when I had switched from one user to the other, when I went to shutdown I would get the message that another user was logged on when I did not expect it.  I believed that when I signed off as one user, all that user's applications were ended.  I believed the same occurred when I did a Restart.  This did not appear to be what was happening.

    What I did was to manually shut down the SharePort Utility, then explicitly signoff the user, then do the Restart.  I do not know that this was the solution, but the installation did finish without a problem!

    I note in your post you do not have a blank space between the equal sign and the "auto" in your SC command.  According to the documentation of the SC command, a blank is required between the equal sign and the value.  Maybe it was something else that worked the magic.  I had a similar experience of seemingly getting multiple updates installed when something cleared the logjam.

    I am not a 'techie' just want a PC that runs windows 10 and updates without me having to spend hours tinkering with things I don't really understand.  Come on Microsoft, pull your finger out and help me (and 1000's of others with the same problem).

    I agree.  Microsoft needs to iron out the bugs before publishing these updates to download and install.
