2018-03 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4088776) - Error 0x80070002

System is stuck in download install, restart, install failed for KB40988776.

OS Build 16299.192

While I cannot remember the previous KB it had the same problem but I was able to work around it and get it installed by using this.

net stop wuauserv net stop cryptSvc   net stop bits net stop msiserver ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old net start wuauserv net start cryptSvc net start bits net start msiserver

But this appears to not work with this build. I do get error messages with SoftwareDistribution.old and catroot2.old. It says the files already exist.

download your system based settings and put it somewhere on the desktop

run the update and it will work fine.

Not really a solution.

To be specific, it wouldnt work in my case as its a false positive.

For some reason the next day it will list the update as failed, even though after the initial restart during the update process, it will be listed as succeeded.

Windows 10 buildinfo reflects that fact.

Its a buggy update process for some reason starting since.. well lets say somewhere between jan and feb. of this year.

Before 2018, never had issues like that. (if it is in fact, an actual issue as in, an actual problem, hence the false positive)

I've been seeing this since the feb. update aswell. (home edition)

I see two lines of text, one says "succeeded" the other will say "failed" with error code : 0x80240034 , usually with 1 day in between. (in the update history)

If i check the buildinfo however, its the correct version.

If i ask if there are updates, it says its fully uptodate, even though prior to clicking the "search for updates" button, there is or was a text saying there is an update being prepared but couldnt install and will try again later or somesuch, that text goes away after i click the button and shows there are no updates.

If i check the eventviewer, i noticed it had issues with installing some random kb's apparantly like for 1 random example : C:\WINDOWS\system32\wusa.exe" Windows8-RT-KB4019990-x64.msu /quiet /promptrestart (also i have no idea for what this is, seems like server related stuff, i dont have a server)

Yet if i check for updates, there are none.

The latest KB (kb4089848), does the same thing, but eventviewer mentions no issues with it. (under setup)

I dont know what MS is doing, but they're becoming sloppy.

As a home user i cant postpone updates.. yet im being forced to take shoddy patches and essentially i've become a beta tester for windows 10.

Now looking at this thread, with 1428 people having the same damn question.. wtf is MS doing? And should we start a class action lawsuit?

Yes agree, the main problem is microsoft brought out an unfinished operating system, full of bugs, which is why i have two operating systems installed, windows 7 and 10, and on my tablet/laptop i stuck with windows 8, to be honest windows 10 is rubbish, and a spywarre so i just use it to see if they fixed anymore bugs alon lines with this ugly UI, which windows 7 beats hands down on.
