Error 0x80070bc2 when Windows 10 update trying to install KB4048955 for version 1709

Windows 10 home, new computer with CPU Intel 8700K working well, version 1709 installed.   

I noticed that windows update gives error 0x80070bc2 when trying to install 2017-11 Cumulative update for Windows Version 1709 for amd64-based systems KB4048955 (and before KB4043961) ... getting a sort of a loop as it requires a restart to finish installing but at any restart gives the same message and does not install.  

Tried various things such as sfc scan, dism, troubleshooting windows update, manual install etc.  Nothing works.  Other updates such as KB4048951 and KB4051613 installed correctly in the last few days.  Can someone help?

This seems to have worked for me:

  • Right-click on Windows key and select Command Prompt (Admin).
  • Type the following commands in Command Prompt window. To execute them, press Enter after each one. 

SC config wuauserv start= auto

SC config bits start= auto

SC config cryptsvc start= auto

SC config trustedinstaller start= auto

  • Finally, restart your PC and try to install the update that was previously returning the 0x80070bc2 error.

    If the problem persists, then it would be worth trying a repair upgrade.

    Thanks I could do that, since the failed update does not seem to alter performance or give me problems.

    However, this is the second cumulative update that fails in a few days, before I had KB4043961, now KB4048955, both behaving in the way I described, so I wonder if I have some sort of software conflict or other issue and if 0x80070bc2 suggests something or it is just a generic error message.  I mean, I would not wish the inability to update to bring me to a point where I experience real problems.

    If this problem should persist over time, should I try to install a new windows image? 

    I am reluctant to do it now but just asking.

    Here is what you do, block it until the next cumulative update. Hopefully, you will have better luck with the next one.

    Is there an option or work around to block updates or hardware drivers that might cause problems?

    Yes, Microsoft has released a KB update (KB3073930) that will let users block or hide Windows or driver updates.

    After the manual install and the restart of the PC, it was not installed and it sayd in View Installed Update History - Security Update for Windows (KB4048955) - Requires a restart to finish installing.

    So I am back at square one.
