Error 0x80070bc2 when Windows 10 update trying to install KB4048955 for version 1709

Windows 10 home, new computer with CPU Intel 8700K working well, version 1709 installed.   

I noticed that windows update gives error 0x80070bc2 when trying to install 2017-11 Cumulative update for Windows Version 1709 for amd64-based systems KB4048955 (and before KB4043961) ... getting a sort of a loop as it requires a restart to finish installing but at any restart gives the same message and does not install.  

Tried various things such as sfc scan, dism, troubleshooting windows update, manual install etc.  Nothing works.  Other updates such as KB4048951 and KB4051613 installed correctly in the last few days.  Can someone help?

This seems to have worked for me:

  • Right-click on Windows key and select Command Prompt (Admin).
  • Type the following commands in Command Prompt window. To execute them, press Enter after each one. 

SC config wuauserv start= auto

SC config bits start= auto

SC config cryptsvc start= auto

SC config trustedinstaller start= auto

  • Finally, restart your PC and try to install the update that was previously returning the 0x80070bc2 error.

    Still the same problem on my PC, Windows-Update want's to install the amd64 version of KB4051963 on an Intel-CPU !

    Waiting on reboot and same procedure again.

    What's the problem to detect an Intel CPU, it's not so unusual... ???

    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-7260 CPU

    Edition: Windows 10 pro

    Build: 16299.64

    I have build 16299.98 on my computer now.  I just can't install the KB4056342. Why go back to 16299.64? Would this allow me to install the KB4054517 the last Cumulative Update. I tried to install manually but it would not install either.  I have had an update to install on my computer since the 4517 update failed, but it's not called a Cumulative Update.  It did not change my build thoug My build is still 16299.98 and if the Cucumlative update had installed I should show 16299.125.

    Hello all; I'm at wit's end on this.  This has consumed days of my time since December 12.  After I ran the install I got "unable to read media"/"attempting repairs"/"can't repair" messages for days.  Installed new hard drive and re-imaged; same problem.  Fixed startup process multiple times and same problem.  Multiple re-images while I did all this.  Days of time.  Finally yesterday I got to where I uninstalled all security programs, made a fresh version using Media Creation Tool, and installed 1709.  Now at least I have a computer that I can turn off and turn back on again without going into "my computer has problems"/"trying to fix problems"/"advanced/startuprepair" loops.  But I'm still where I was on 12/12, in that I cant install KB4054517.  One advancement, though, was that I could install an iTunes update without sending the computer back into the loop.  Clean boot, no antivirus.  Tried all suggestions on this string.  Currently at:

    Update History

    -Quality Updates (2)

      -2017-12 cum update for win ver 1709 for x64-based systems (KB4054517) (2)

      Last failed attempt on 12/30/17 - 0x80070bc2

      -Security Update for Windows (KB4048955) (installed at suggestion in this message chain)

      Requires a restart to finish processing.

    I've restarted multiple times with same results.

    What else can I do?
