I want to comment on these methods to check or retrieve your files.

While I am thankful the Moderator is attempting to help – I also don’t believe Microsoft is aware of how completely trashed this latest so-called upgrade did to some of these computers – including mine!

As I stated in an earlier comment – once the update was complete – the computer was blank.

    • Screen – Black
    • Recycle Bin (the only Icon on the desktop) – no access right or left click
    • Microsoft Logo Start Button – no color – no access.
    • Search magnifying glass on tool bar – no access
    • Internet icon on toolbar – no access (either wireless or hardwired plugged into router)
    • Battery icon on toolbar – seems to be working
    • Volume control on tool bar – no access up or down.

Any attempt to access files has resulted in this dialog box:

C:\Windows*system32**config**systemprofile**Desktop* refers to a location that is unavailable. It  could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or your network, and then try again.

This disk is the C: drive and has never been removed.

    I have no network.

The computer has no internet access - as mentioned above.  (and yes, I have everything else in my place connected to my wireless - so I know it's the computer).

Honestly, for Windows 10 – after perhaps Tens of 1,000 of hours’ worth of testing and application – to completely trash my Acer Notebook Computer like this – is unbelievable and totally unacceptable.

I have already spend hours clicking any and everything on the computer to try and resolve.

I have also spend hours researching this problem via another computer – hence, the reason I found this specific Microsoft page.

Oh, and one more thing  - - that other computer that I'm typing this message on - - well, I got the exact same UPDATE  NOTICE yesterday.

Needless to say, I cannot afford to fall for that again.

    MicroSoft - get this resolved.

No more updates until this is fixed.

Having exactly the same issue as SsBbCA.... The update was pushed out and now there is a black screen with only the recycle bin showing. No access to any other parts of the computer. All attempts to troubleshoot have been thwarted.... Hopefully if enough people have the problem, Microsoft might do something?

I found this site which suggests creating a new user login, however it didn't work for me, maybe it will work for someone else - https://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/fix-c-windows-system32-config-systemprofile-desktop-is-unavailable-on-windows-10-1803-login/

I had the same issue with an earlier update.

Tried creating a second account and made it primary, which made things worse. Even then, I would sometimes start up the computer and get a black screen.

I did find one solution that helped. I pressed Ctrl+Alt+Del and opened Task Manager. Then I could click "File" at the top left and "Run New Task". I typed in explorer.exe and pressed enter. Then my desktop was functional again.

It fixed itself up after another update, but I spent months doing this. I thought I'd mention it on the off chance it helps someone.

On a slightly different note, I woke up on the 22nd to Windows having done it's latest update and wouldn't even get to a black screen, just my laptop logo and the spinning dots. So I did a system restore, which pulled it back to 2 days previously. Unfortunately, it wiped everything on C drive. There was a windows.old folder which I recovered my music, photos, documents, etc from. Thankfully I did this before windows tried to do it's "yeah, I'm going to go ahead and update again, mmkay?" routine. Unfortunately, I did not remove my e-mail data for Thunderbird before letting it do it's thing. Now I'm trying to find a way to get my old e-mail settings and messages back. I've tried two different recovery programs. The first one I think I found what I needed, but once found, wanted me to pay US$80 for the program. The second one does not find full folders that are needed to restore the e-mail settings.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'm happy to try them.

None of these 'methods' worked for me or, it seems, for many others with the same problem. I'm flabbergasted that Microsoft can get away with this and dare to suggest that we should have to pay for a technician to solve something completely of their making. I've lost absolutely everything. Hours of work i can never get back.
