I am in a state of shock. I was already using windows 10 and last night automated updates started without allowing me to stop them. This morning my computer is cleaned out with all thosevery important document deleted!!! Microsoft can do that??? How can I recover them ALL?????

Typical 'its not us approach', often with 'go to settings' which you cant because the update wiped your computer. They will NEVER admit or compensate, but will continue to take your money. This makes them morally corrupt and as Microsoft is embedded in business and personal systems they cant lose.
The exact same thing happened to me today! I've wasted a day trying to find all my lost files and apps. The laptop has been reset to default settings. It has none of my documents or backup history or anything of mine on the pc. I uninstalled the security downloads from the night before. No change.
I haven't used my external drive to reboot the laptop because I don't want to lose or damage those files.....what do I do now? Do I need to purchase a new laptop? All was well until the updates last night! Where do I get help?
I watched the laptop progressively lose everything during the day today. At one point it seemed to identify me as a temporary user. Then everything reverted to factory defaults....no files, no history, nothing left.
It has to be the updated security downloads installed last night. I did nothing to cause this.
This is what I did. Go to "C" drive and then open "users". What ever name you sign in with, click on that and all your files should be there. You can click on what files you want ie "documents" and right click to pin to "start"........From there you can also pin to task bar. This is ok until Microsoft update again and then it might happen all over again.......I'm fed up with having to do this after every update but at least you get your most important files back....... Good luck.
Thank you for your help. All my programs had been returned to factory default so nothing existed on c drive either. What did work was starting and restarting the laptop 4 times consecutively as suggested by another kind soul in the Microsoft community. It worked! The process felt like I was trying to jump start a model t, BUT IT WORKED! username, password, restart 4 times co nsecutively and I got all my files back and all my customized settings. Alacazam! Biddy bobbidy boo!
