Automated Windows 10 updates deleted all my documents and files

I am in a state of shock. I was already using windows 10 and last night automated updates started without allowing me to stop them. This morning my computer is cleaned out with all thosevery important document deleted!!! Microsoft can do that??? How can I recover them ALL?????

    Just so you all know:  LINUX is not exempt from this issue!!!  I'm running Sierra 10.12.6 on a iMac Notebook.  I have Microsoft Office that has been trying to push updates to me.  I've stymied them off for some months and finally the updates went.  It erased everything in my Documents folder and replaced it with just Microsoft Office folders.  

    Here's where it gets bad:  I have my pictures and documents synced for backup to a cloud service.  It immediately wiped it from the backup cloud service as well.  

    This. Is. Crazy.    How the f$*k is Microsoft able to get away with this junk.

    Not only where is the lawsuit to signup, but how has Microsoft not pulled this update attempt after knowing all this time that it is devious?

    Actually, this problem has happened to my work laptop 4 times since July 31. The most recent deletions was twice today. Each time it creates a new profile, 000, 0001,0002, etc. It leaves the folder structure intact, but deletes the contents of all the folders.

    My stuff was actually safe in the previous folder but before I had time to copy my things, a couple of hours later,  it created yet another profile. This time, everything went - contents of desktop, docs, photos, videos. and all preferences, but folder structure is still there.

    My stuff is always backed up to a portable drive and I only leave stuff on my desktop that I can afford to lose, but I'm getting tired of re-syncing my bookmarks and other customizations such as wall papers and power schemes.  

    For the record, I'm on 1809 Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.17134.376] Surface Book.

    Frankly, I'm the only one in my organization with the problem (that I know of) so tomorrow, I'm just going to image it and start over and hope a fresh copy of Windows will make the problem go away.
