    Exact same thing...

I got the "Important updates are pending" message.  This notice came up several times on my Acer notebook running Windows 10.

I finally selected "Pick a time" then selected a time about one hour ahead and then closed all of the open apps and web sites.  Then sat back and allowed the computer to auto start the updates.

When I came back, the screen requested the language option (English selected) then it continued to update with pleasant prompts stating not to turn the computer off.

Checked several times during the update process and saw calming messages like, "Leave everything to us" and "Making sure your apps are good to go."

When finished, the entire hard drive is deleted.  All files, docs, pictures and desktop icons are gone.

The dialog box that comes up says, “Location is not available"

                         C:\WINDOWS\system32|config\systemprofile\Desktop is unavailable.

This is completely outrageous.   "Unavailable" is an understatement.  I have a black screen!

The start button with the logo is at the bottom of the tool bar - but does nothing.

There is a search icon in the toolbar - does nothing.

There is a task view icon in the toolbar - does nothing.

There is no internet connection (either wireless or hardwired plugged into the router - tried both), no desktop, no apps, no browser, docs, picture, nothing but a recycle bin.

The notebook battery indcator icon in the toolbar seems to be functioning.

Yes, tried to restart many times - no change.

I’m not a computer expert – but I’ve been using Windows since it first came out.  I have never seen anything like this.

For a forced update on an OS like Windows 10 – in this day and age – to completely trash a customer’s computer - this is unacceptable.

    I am beyond angry.

NO FREAKING WAY!!!! right around the same time I had received an update and my HP laptop ha d a blue screen of death. I was able to get to the HP recovery screen but unable to save any files, I had my babies pictures on there ,family videos. I was going to put together a family gathering of god times when they reached their "time to leave the nest" time. I was sooooo freakin upset at the time. I reaserched for days on how or what I could do and to nothing I felt comfortable trying. I reached out to the online tech who was more than helpful at 5am during early hours atl can time hahhahahah.  He informed me I could use an iso. image to back up my windows and not lose any of the personal data. Unfortunately I was unable to mount the ISO and brought my laptop in for local repairs here in town who COMPLETELY 100% wiped it totally clean "IF THERE WERE ANY DATA LEFT INSIDE SOMEWHERES" and that's what I'm on now.. win 10 home edtn but when I dig inside it seems fishy and theres 3 computer ID's and it just doesent sit well with me and I do feel something is WRONG with how he re installed the OS and it seems to me theres an extra partition and I'm sure I saw a report that mentioned that there was something to be looked at but instal kept occurring. I'm not  atech but I do wish I knew more because like I mentioned ...something just doesent sit sell with my Laptop since I got it back from  Moncton Computer Exchange here in New Brunswick Canada. Thank you and I'm sorry you had such a aloss as well my friend. Remember as much as it sux B*tt the memories and files are still all up in the real filing cabinet , just might take a bit 'O time to pull em out is al, Cheers guys...Dave from Moncton NB CANATAAA

We had the same issue! All the restore options, file history, back up restore points DID NOT SHOW ANY FILES. My C drive and D drive, however, showed files but could not open/access. I found 1 post that suggested a simple RESTART of my computer to restore AND...VOILA! Everything BACK TO NORMAL.
