Unfortunately, people get aware of the only solution (blocking automatic update) when the damage is already done.
It is more than a year that I complained about the Windows 10 Updates, and it is few month after I offered a simple and only solution so far--since Microsoft has not been able to debug its major update that acts like a virus, deleting people's files and application under the pretext of "security", while even a virus/hacker cannot create so much harm!
As for the solution:
1- You should create an image of your laptop (=complete backup)
2-If you have Windows 10 Home Edition upgrade it to Professional edition (even though it is an extra source of income for MS!!), then you can postpone the Windows Updates for one year, under the Setting.
3- Even so, after upgrading, a year passed and MS could not figure out how to debug its automatic updates so it leaves with the final solution: BLOCK the update completely, no matter what! To see how, look at the following instruction:

Computer Configuration àAdministrative Templates
àWindows Components
àWindows Update
to disable the updates.
In more detailes, step by step:
1. Open Start.
2. Search for gpedit.msc and select the top result to launch the procedure.
3. When Local Group Policy Editor window opened double click onComputer Configuration
3.1. Now, double click on Administrative Templates
3.2. Now double click on Windows Components
3.3. Double click Windows Update nearthe end of the list at the new window
4. After double clicking on Windows Update, find and double-click
the Configure Automatic Updates policy on the right side.

Check the Disabled option
to turn off the policy, then Apply
and OK.
YOU ARE NOW SAFE FROM THE UPDATES!
