    Jmk2141,

I am stuck in the exact same scenario for the second time. I am pretty sure Windows update service triggers the problem. My computer will be fine and then an update occurs in the middle of the night. Next time I boot I get the Windows could not complete the installation error. None of the solutions on any of the forums I have tried work. The only fix is the reinstall from scratch. After the second time, I am afraid it will happen again. I repair a lot of computers and this is the first time I have ever seen an error this persistent. I hope Microsoft comes up with a fix.

Had this error on an HP laptop that was trying to update to the Fall Creators Update, found a simple solution that worked for me here:

    https://www.drivereasy.com/knowledge/windows-could-not-complete-the-installation-solved/

Basically you enter the recovery console, go to Reset My PC, Keep My Files, and at the last screen you CANCEL, then Exit and continue to Windows 10.

May or may not work for you, but worth a shot if anyone is still having this issue. Prob wouldn't recommend you install Drivereasy, personally I hate those 'driver update' programs, but that's up to you. ;-)

Time will tell if it happens again. Will clean up Windows in the meantime: install all HP updates, remove any software that isn't needed (like an expired McAfee that was bundled) etc..

24/2/18.  Lenovo laptop. Auto uodate for windows 10. And then on restarting laptop got message “windows could not complete the instalation. To install windows on this computer, restart the installation”.

Restarting brings back to same message and unable to even access safe mode. Any ideas what i can do.
