OK I would like to add couple hints to this solution provided by jcbuchin02.

    1. I have created a bootable USB using the Windows Media Tool.  After you create this, using File Explorer look into the folders and you will see a setup.exe in the root of the USB.  That is what jcbuchin02 was talking about.
    2. Start your computer without the USB.  Let it advance to the error.
    3. Now press Shift-F10 and the command prompt should open.
    4. Insert the USB.  Depending on how many drives you had before, the USB drive may be recognized as D, E of something else.
    5. Using the command prompt try to switch to the USB
    6. Once you are in the USB type, setup and setup will run.

The installation still takes between 1-2 hours.

    This has worked for me

Exactly the same problem here. Windows updates itself, but cannot continue with installation.

Restart takes me back to the same error.

    Tried oobe/msoobe - nothing happens.

Tried installation DVD - Repair this computer. Boot repair doesn't work, Restore point says I need to restart and choose system (which I can't), Return to previous system doesn't work.

Tried to update from installation DVD - Says I need to update from system - can't do.

Is there a way to continue with the installation or get back to the point before it?

Otherwise I will backup the data from another computer and perform clean install.

To help resolve your issue ...

Microsoft owns the Windows Update Service, provides the update software which decides to run the update.  It breaks my computer in such a way that now I have to read through technical jargon to fix a problem that I did not cause.  I already had a running Windows 10 installation and I need my computer back.  Instead of telling me how to install a clean copy of Windows why don't you tell us how to go back to a previous restore point right before this update has started.

    Same with me.

"Windows could not complete installation. To complete Windows on this computer, restart the installation. "

No matter what I do nothing works. My computer when restarting, typing the safe mode command(shift+f8) does not work, and there is no way for my PC to turn off unless i hard reset.

I have the Windows10 upgrade for reference.
