Mystery app preventing Windows 10 shutdown after update.

Since a Windows 10 update a few weeks ago, when I go to shut down, it says it is closing and there is an app running ------- but there is no app running So I wait for it to close that nonexistent app, and after a few minutes, I am back to the computer being ready to work, not shutting down. When will a new update fix this? Yesterday's update did not fix this. It is not a serious problem, but it is annoying to have to click "Shut down anyway" to really shut down. What is this app that hides itself and won't quit?

I am having the same problem, Also I used to use a app that cleans computer then shut down, but will not shut down. now since windows update.

There is your problem or some of it. Never use any program to clean PC or registry. All they do is clean things they should not. Then they are really just a gimmick. That's it.

Use disk clean up, keep virus protection on DEFENDER. Keep temp internet and user files deleted often. Do not install free software and toolbars that are full of malware and viruses. Stay off suspicious websites.

Seahawk all I was pointing out was that even apps will not shut down the computer when asked due to the mysterious app.see original thread, all we want is constructive answers to our problem, its obvious you have not had this problem. yes it is a problem thats why people are enquiring about it.,

What`s your answer to microsoft "install update and shut down" not shutting down?

I bet my last answer is pretty close to accurate.

You start running CCeaner or use a registry cleaner, 2 virus programs, install free software loaded with malware and many other things and this is what causes this 98% of the time.

Connected devices to PC could be causing it.

Print queue with items left in it causes this.

Corrupt software installation of just 1 program causes this.

Have you looked in start up in task manager and disabled everything and tried to log off, log on and log off again ???? Including defender

Have you looked in your programs and features at all the programs installed on your pc for unknown programs that 80% of pc users install by accident or are malware with free software.

And especially a corrupt or hung network or configuration can cause this.

modem reset and all pc restarts can fix this.

You have to analyze it and diagnose and process of elimination.

Then, have you looked in details in task manager for a program that might be running and low CPU% usage that is suspicious.

There is 50 reasons why this could be happening.

Even a windows service, very possible is not shutting down on log off or restart.

I do have this annoying thing happen every time close down for the last month or so. SFC did not find any integrity violations on my machine either.

I agree it is annoying having to click either the force shutdown or don't close and then re-close every time i want to turn off the computer.

Hope there is an answer soon.
