Since a Windows 10 update a few weeks ago, when I go to shut down, it says it is closing and there is an app running ------- but there is no app running So I wait for it to close that nonexistent app, and after a few minutes, I am back to the computer being ready to work, not shutting down. When will a new update fix this? Yesterday's update did not fix this. It is not a serious problem, but it is annoying to have to click "Shut down anyway" to really shut down. What is this app that hides itself and won't quit?

I have had the same issue. My system has been hacked and my personal files have been stolen by hackers. THIS IS SERIOUS AS IT CAN BYBASS ANTIVIRUS DETECTION. I BELIEVE IT IS FOOLING MY FIREWALL TO NOT BLOCK INCOMING CONNECTIONS BECAUSE IT IS PROBABLY INITIATING THE OUTGOING CONNECTION.
I've read this entire thread from beginning to end - tried some of the suggestions (which didn't work) and I have no idea how to address it. I'm just adding my 2 cents to add to the weight of entries already on here. Alas !! :-(
GavinGillespie i have no idea if this was addressed but this was only one of my problems. And this is what i've done in the bottom right corner of windows 10 is a carrot symbol this can be clicked on and i shows programs that are running if you right click them then exit those programs this has stopped the message from returning during shut down.
Thanks for the reply Dominic, but I do not have a 'carrot' symbol on the bottom right hand side, or anything that looks like one, I will experiment with that area though, and see if I can come up with anything.

That said this wasn't my biggest problem. That was using the xbox 1 controller on my laptop and when the new update came on in dec. it stopped working correctly (Most functions still work but some buttons do not) there's a program called reWASD out there that lets you used it for mapping controllers but it's $6 i don't want to spend.
I did try to "net stop" the two programs suggested. However, even though I'm the administrator, I was not allowed access to those commands.
Did you right click on the Command prompt, and select 'Run as administrator? The first time I tried I forgot to do that, and it didn't allow me to access the commands, so I had to go back and right click it.
