Mystery app preventing Windows 10 shutdown after update.

Since a Windows 10 update a few weeks ago, when I go to shut down, it says it is closing and there is an app running  ------- but there is no app running   So I wait for it to close that nonexistent app, and after a few minutes, I am back to the computer being ready to work, not shutting down. When will a new update fix this?  Yesterday's update did not fix this. It is not a serious problem, but it is annoying to have to click "Shut down anyway" to really shut down.  What is this app that hides itself and won't quit?

    Go to

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Administrative Tools

    Computer Management or Event Viewer

And in Event Viewer, you can get every detailed bit of info about the OS and what is going on.

You may find the program or running process details that will lead you to the culprit.

But you will find many errors on every OS, that have no negative effect on the system or operations.

Good luck with that, because if it does not tell you what it is, good luck. I can suggest to go to start up tab in task manager and disable about 3 or 4 of them at a time and log off and see if this pops up. If it does go back and disable more until you have disabled them all. This will eliminate all your start up programs.

then if it still does this, there are hundreds of running processes and apps that run, you can verify this in task manager in details and services.

your chance of pin pointing this is very slim or way too time consuming for anyone to waste time on.

You can look through these apps and services and see if any are running high CPU% while idle, that could maybe be the one.

You can type in msconfig in start or Cortana search and run it and there are many things you can do to diagnose problems like this.

This may be your only option. MSCONFIG

    Task Manager

Under all these tabs you can look.

One thing to try in the APP HISTORY, is to delete the history.

wait a few minutes and log off. let the force close box stay up without doing a forced close it to log off for about 3 minutes. Then force it closed and log back on and see look for the longest running time between all apps. It may show the longest running app 3 minutes longer than any other since you just deleted the history before logging off. This might give you a clue what is not shutting down on log off or restart.

Your point, in a nutshell, is "Suck it up and live with it".

To me, your assertion that my issue is a "non-issue" of no concern is just another way of saying that you haven't a clue as to what caused it nor a clue as to how to fix it.

Awaiting more helpful responses from others.

Thanks for your contribution to the discussion.
