Controlled Folder Access Blocked problem in Windows Defender

On 12/13 , Windows Defender did an update and ever since I keep getting messages like the following when I try to access programs such as Carbonite, Quicken, etc.  The message says:

Controlled folder Access Blocked C:\Program Folders ...qw.exe from making changes to the folder %userprofile\desktop

I have turned off the Controlled Folder Access off in Windows Defender as this error message popped up every time I wanted to access a program.  I was able to get into the program but need to know what is going on and what I can do about it.  Thank you.

    I turned OFF Controlled Folder Access and that has ended my problem with it blocking Java which runs my Diabetes Software, Glucofacts Deluxe.

    In addition to Defender I am also using Malwarebytes to protect my computer so I'm not worried.

    Where I chose to save a file, desktop or in docs is my decision.  Controlled folder alerts are not helpful to solve the issue as the alert does not point me to the application, such as notepad, etc., but some long gibberish.  If the alert said notepad, Quicken.exe or other and I could click to add that to allow access Iknow is safe as I initiated it, it would be more user friendly.  MS, wake up, millions of us run Win 10 Home, we are not IT experts so fix this please.

    This may help with new app installs but I get problems with apps that have been on my laptop a long time and even MS notepad and word pad saves.  MS has to make the blocked alerts evident as to what app is involved and where it resides so I can add it to the allowed list.

    Windows Defender is blocking the Windows10 troubleshooter for Windows Updates. Explain that.

    I would suggest getting a ransomware program (either free or paid-for), installing it, and then turning off Controlled Folder Access.
