File History Not Backing Up OneDrive Local Files

Running 16299.19 on new Surface Pro. I have about 15GB of OneDrive files synched to my local HDD. I have unchecked the "files on demand" button so that files are actually synched locally; however, when File History runs, it does not include those files in the backup. I have added my OneDrive folder to my Documents library, and I have included the OneDrive directory in the included folders through Windows settings. When I make changes to OneDrive files, they seem to be backed up incrementally; however, it is not making an initial backup, so there is no way I could do a complete restore if something happened to all of my OneDrive files.

I have tried disconnecting my OneDrive account, deleting all local OneDrive files, turning off file history, deleting file history files and setup files, reconnecting OneDrive, and turning File History back on. I have also tried turning on File History before re-connecting my OneDrive account.

I have copied the email they sent me below.  I was able to see the green check marks and having reset OneDrive it didn't restart so I had to run the final task.  Then all was and still is well.

  • Are you able to see the green check marks on all the files/folders in OneDrive folder of file explorer?

Try resetting your OneDrive in windows 10 computer:-

  • Press the Windows key + R.
  • In the Run window, enter: %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset
  • Click OK.
  • Make sure the OneDrive icon in the notification area of the taskbar disappears and then re-appears after a minute or two. Here’s how to check: Right-click the white OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area, at the far right of the taskbar.

(You might need to click the Show hidden icons arrow next to the notification area to see the

OneDrive icon.)

  • If the OneDrive icon doesn’t re-appear after a few minutes, open the Run window again and enter: %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe

This is why I mostly find this site pointless.  People just cut and paste the same stuff and never take time to read what the problem is.  They just want recognition, points, etc.. and are not really here to help.  I have never had a resolution to any of my problems come from this site unless the person having the issue resolves it themselves and posts the answer.  It never comes from the so called experts.  I do find the site useful to know if the issue is wide spread or isolated to just me.  I have this issue and last I heard it was determined it was a OneDrive issue that should be fixed in January.

I have this same issue. It's also broken in multiple other backup software, like WD Smartware, and Veeam, etc. Microsoft changed somehting in the way the OS sees the files that is braking things.

    I read this back in the summer and did wonder what they were going to.  From looking at my Fall Creators Update install, the File History component is still working and able to perform backups;

It was performing backups of all files prior to the upgrade and following the upgrade it was continuing to perform backups, but not the local OneDrive replicas.  Following me resetting the OneDrive client, it starting backing up the local repicas.  So the component still doing what it did.

However for many others the issue is still there and Microsoft needs to investigate and get this working.  As it's part of the operating system.

Here is a little more information based on some recently observed File History behaviors. The way I have backed up One Drive files in the past has been to add my One Drive folder to my documents library. Up until the Fall Creator's update, that worked fine. The other day, I disabled File History, and added an individual folder from OneDrive to the documents library. I re-enabled File History, and it backed up that folder. I then tried adding another folder to the documents library, but File History did not back it up. Today, I disabled/re-enabled File History, and this time it backed up the files and sub-folders in both of the OneDrive folders that I had added to the documents library.

This is not a workable solution, but maybe it provides some insight into what is going on with File History in terms of how it identifies the files that get backed up initially. Along with this, File History does backup any files from any of my OneDrive folders when those files change; it just doesn't back them up as part of a baseline backup unless I follow the steps above.

For what it's worth, I also tried creating a new library that contained only the OneDrive folder, but File History just ignored it.

    Thanks!
