Windows update messed up my computer

I saw this thing in the notification center that said something about a windows update. I can't remember exactly what it said or looked like. But I clicked on it and let it update and do it's thing.  

Then when it was done. I set the computer to restart and update. When it updated and restarted I started to have problems like the start menu refused to come up. And I could not start task manager. Task manager would just get a timeout error after a bit of waiting. I could not do anything from the taskbar except open file explorer. I tried waiting for 20mins and that didn't work. So I tried restarting a couple of times and that did not work.

Then I tried holding the shift key and restarting from the log in menu to try resetting it with a restore point and there was no restore points? I know I made restore points before the troubles started to occur?

So the thing that fixed it was this option to revert to a previous version of windows. 

In that menu that I got up from holding the shift key at windows login and restarting the computer. 

This is a brand new computer I bought from Costco. 

I would really like feedback from you. And want to know what you think? 

Is it happening to a lot of other people? Or just me so far? 

I really hope you can give me a good answer that would make me feel better about the whole thing!

I kinda freaked out and thought... what if I got a lemon!  :)

    Well that's just brilliant, now my entire system crashed, wont boot, wont load recovery options. Had no choice but to format and re-install.

    Damn you microsoft

    Scrap my last advice. I have tried to stop the updates via all the options in group policy and still the update installs without my say so. Disabled windows update service and still it installs.

    I will rip apart the REG keys next as yet again my computer is broke and yet again it deletes my restore points. Calling Microsoft at the weekend as my SSD is now showing severe signs of fatigue and failures, Thanks a lot MS

    Well surprise, surprise yet again the update has installed and again has completely messed up my system.

    Hopefully there is some light as I realised that I have Win 10 Pro which has enterprise controls available specifically for Group Policy.

    If you want to stop updates installing automatically use Run ( Windows key + R) and type gpedit.msc then select okay.

    Please be careful in the group policy editor as on this advice we are only interested in Windows Updates.

    In the editor on the Left Drop Down:

    • Administrative Templates
    • Windows Components

    Now select (left click) Windows update and on the right hand side  double click "Configure Automatic Updates"

    Ensure this is enabled and then you can choose the option for how updates are delivered for this I have chosen:

    Notify for download and notify for install. 

    Although not perfect I can only hope this helps

    AGAIN MICROSOFT PLEASE JUST GIVE AN EASY OPTION TO TURN OF UPDATES AS THEY DO NOT WORK FOR EVERYONE. THIS CONSTANT HAVING  TO REVERT AND FIX A BROKEN UPDATE IS EVENTUALLY GOING TO WRECK MY SSD OR WORSE THEN I WILL BE SEEKING COMPENSATION

    I am glad this has worked for you Malcolm :), I have/had all updates but still run into issues with the 1709 build using Intel Core i5 5th gen

    After restoring windows to an earlier time I was able to get it to boot past the windows logo. Every time windows updated to the same point it crashed. Event viewer gave me a clue as to where the problem lay, several updates. I tried to fix windows update using the trouble shooter but that did not work. To cut a long story short update KB4073290 Cumulative update solved the problem. Apparently this was all due to older AMD processors. This is a stand alone update but did not appear as a solution until I had wasted several days trying to solve the problem.
