.Docx files are not showing word icon but only white plain icon (Windows 10)

Hi Ravikash,

Conflicts with the default program settings is one of the possible reasons why you are only having white plain icons on your .DOCX files. To resolve this, I would recommend that you perform a Repair Office from the Control Panel. You can follow the steps in this link.

I performed the repair and also set word as default program but did not help. Please provide any alternative solution.

This worked! Gosh, it was driving me crazy... I tried all these things and it was a simple fix. Much appreciated to find this post!

My issue was the .docx default string was pointing to "docx_auto_file”.

I changed the default to Word.Document.16 and it worked like a charm.

Remember, after you make the change to the registry you must right-click your word document icon, Select Open with, and choose the Word app and make sure to check the Always use this app to open...

Thank you to both Rdmaster and Sm0othch1ck! I started having this problem after one of many Windows 10 updates in Sept./Oct. 2019 with my Office 365 installation. I already had all of the registry keys in Rdmaster's reply, but had Word.Document.12 instead of 16 (like Sm0othch1ck). So all I had to do was left click on the .docx key and then change the Default key data value, which, like Rdmaster's, was docx_auto_file, to Word.Document.12. And then refresh the icons by changing the default opener to WordPad and then back to Word.

Just bought Microsoft Surface laptop with Windows 10.  I have this problem too (white/blank icons instead of showing me if the docs are PPT, xl or Word etc). It is proper annoying to spend nearly CHF2K (laptop and MS Office Home & Business 2016) and then have these issues. None of the fixes I found so far online work.  Please tell me how to fix this, thanks.

I'm having the same problem with Word .docx files (word icon shows for .doc files tho) and it ONLY started happening after the Windows update the other day.  I have run the Office Repair and even re-installed Office and that fixed Excel, PowerPoint & Access but not Word.  What have you guys done?  It took me quite a while to get my desktop functioning the way it was pre-update.  Can you please fix whatever you've broken with the most recent update!!
