Windows 10 1709 freeze randomly

The worst part of this is if you wait more than 10 days after 1709 is forced on you, it won't let you go back to version 1703 (which wasn't locking up the computer).  I didn't even know that 1709 was loaded on this laptop, but I noticed the constant crashing (nothing works, not even the keyboard or mouse so you can't get to the task manager) and finally figured out that my computer was updated behind my back.  Fortunately I have an old W10 backup on hard drive, but I'm going to lose many of my documents and programs if I restore it.  So now I'm caught between a rock and a hard place.  Thanks Microsoft!

Probably worth trying the "disable fast startup" fix - and also make sure you have got all available Windows Updates (if the computer runs enough to be able to do that).

The fact that you can get task manager up tells me its not the exact same problem I have. When mine freezes its total game over until a reset. However, many people have reported that an early March Win Update solved their problems.

As for the docs you have, copy them onto a memory stick or sync them to OneDrive. If the laptop won't run at all, maybe start it in safe mode to enable you to copy docs off. As a last resort, remove the hard drive and connect it to a different PC to get the docs off.

Fast start up did not work for me and I was able to isolate my freezes to either Setup (display) or windows Photo (adjust features) and a few other times.  I finally just reloaded Windows 10 starting with 1703 and because I didn't disable the auto updates it updated to 1709, but no more freezes (it's been a week).  I also have Office 365 and reloaded all updated versions.  I have a Samsung Laptop (ATIV) touch.   Best wishes to those who are still having troubles. ~Sally

Actually I CAN'T get to the task manager as there is no response from the keyboard and mouse.  It wouldn't be so bad if I could!  I have to hold the power button down to shut the computer down, and then power back up.  I've had to do this dozens of times since the 1709 update, and although the previous W10 version 1703 was not the greatest (had printer driver, network issues, etc.) it didn't lock up on me like the 1709 update.  Fortunately I was able to catch the 1709 update within 10 days on my desktop, and rolled it back to 1703.

Same here, no blue screen, just everything freezes and the only way to recover is to hold the laptop power button down until it shuts off, then power up start.

Freezing in Windows 10 may be caused by corrupted system files or hardware issue. We'd like to know if you've tried all the troubleshooting steps provided previously on this thread. How was it?

I have the exact same problem, All drivers checked and fully up to date, all current updates installed, Yet every so often, The entire machine just stops dead, I have to hard reset with power button, Which may i point out is not healthy for a modern hard disk, Get it sorted Microsoft or i will be changing operating systems after being with you since Windows 95.
