Thanks for your help this procedure solved the problem on all my Windows 7 computers which failed to Update as per this community dialog.

    Open Control Panel

    Select System

    Select Action Center Bottom LHS

Select Troubleshooting (Find and Fix problems)

    Select System and Security

Select Fix problems with Windows Update

Dear goddess, this finally worked - I haven't been able to get updates for over a year, and none of the solutions in the forums have helped.

Could MS push invisible updates with an apparently non working WU ?

When you put back your date, WU restarted working. By looking for updates, it first checks if it needs to update itself and it does it silently. That's how you got the new authcab

Ok, I wasn't aware of this since I didn't get the new authcab file, issued on 2017-12-01T00:00:00 with the regular updates downloaded on 2017-12-02T20:29:27
