    Didn't have the 80248015 error but the imprecise "extremely long delay" mentioned by Retired-telco above seemed an eternity, so I fixed WU differently on my W7 Home machine by resetting the date to the last one I got regular updates. WU is fixed, but I Wonder how I got the updated authcab file since it doesn't appear as an update itself, nor does WU show any sign of update as such. Was authcab bundled with another file ? Could MS push invisible updates with an apparently non working WU ?

    I wonder if any of the fixes listed in this thread actually accomplished correcting the 80248015 error, or Microsoft fixed the bug.  My 'fix' is the least likely to have changed Update, but again, anything is possible.  

    If some one gets the error, goes out to the coop and swings a live chicken over their head 3 times in a count-clockwise motion, goes back to their computer and now updates work...should we borrow someone's rooster?

    Thanks for your help this procedure solved the problem on all my Windows 7 computers which failed to Update as per this community dialog.

    Open Control Panel

    Select System

    Select Action Center Bottom LHS

    Select Troubleshooting (Find and Fix problems)

    Select System and Security

    Select Fix problems with Windows Update

    Run program and at the end it will give you an option to Open Windows Updates, select the choice and hey presto it will now show any Important Updates and Optional Updates pending, your computer is now back to normal and receiving Windows Updates.

    Actually Window Update doesn't need Silverlight to run.  However, Silverlight needs to have Windows Update set to update other Microsoft products in order to be updated itself, so as part of it's installation it enables update for other Microsoft products in Windows Update.  You don't need to keep Silverlight if you don't want it.  Uninstalling Silverlight will not stop Windows Update from updating other Microsoft products.  Installing Silverlight is just a quick way to get Windows Update back to full operation.  I uninstalled Silverlight and WU still works just fine.
