This solved the Windows Update problem on one computer, but not on the other running the same version (Win 7 Pro, SP1).  The second computer didn't have the option to update other Microsoft programs, so I couldn't turn it off.  It's still not updating.

On the first computer, it seems to be updating again, but I really need to have the other Microsoft programs updated.  How do I get this back on?  The option to enable this has disappeared!

EASY & FAST FIX that I found on internet after 2 days of searching.

    Click on:

    Control Panel

    System & Security

    Windows Update

    Change settings

Go to 3rd option "Give me updates for Microsoft products and check for new optional Microsoft software when I update Windows" and uncheck this option.

Click OK and close the Windows Update window then reopen & the error should be gone & Windows should be able to update as before. Mine was back to normal right away.
