I prefer w10 on 950xl to 8 on the 920 but fwiw agree with everything else you said except leaving MS out of it, they need to break the monolith up and accept that they aren't automatically no. 1 anymore but they do have some decent technologies that could be used more effectively.

I agree that the problems were and are tractable and a company like MS *should* have been able to solve them, they have *chosen* not to because that's what makes sense to them as a business. I wasn't in the meeting so can't say why but if they had asked I would have said stick with it for all the positive points made in this thread and because they have a small but loyal following which may have swung the market at some point.  However it's not my money I would be burning so I have to respect their decision.

I agree it's possible they may change their minds but that would be very different from the Lumia/W10M we talk about in this interminable thread and I'm not stretching any illusion to point out that they have a) said they don't want to maintain mobile b) stopped Lumia production c) canned (at least for now) the 'surface phone' project. Its also not stretching anything to say that for all I admire about them they have been spectacularly poor at managing mass market perceptions since the anti-trust discussions, they managed to lose a hugely dominant position on xbox and become steadily less relevant on the desktop/laptop in the face of a fast moving market they keep alienating.

I would be very pleased if they turned this around, I've been a supporter of them for many years and don't want that investment wasted, but they show no appetite for change and have become exactly what Bill Gates hated about IBM; stodgy, over regulated and short on innovative ideas. That doesn't mean they will fail, just that they won't find it easy to change as rapidly as the mobile mass market requires so perhaps the decision to move away from that market is the correct one.

• in my opinion Microsoft is a perfect match with Windows Phone // I think that the Nokia deal, which has taken the Finnish company out of Windows Phone has been a mistake, because Windows Phone has needed as many OEMs as possible. On the other way Microsoft has to show a way for these OEMs & has to offer the possibility for its fans to have Microsoft branded Windows Phones. I like the Microsoft brand & the company has to live up to the Microsoft fans' expectations (it is like in sports, i.e. when your team is struggling or it is in a rebuilding process, it is still your favorite team). I respect their work, with the many great innovations accomplished & hope that they will develop a comprehensive strategy, that will ensure steady growth & a path to competitiveness in terms of the market share (they are very competitive in many ways already).

++ there are many + assessments also for 2018, though most of the tech guys are talking about the great distinctive features & legacy (they are not seeing the future of the platform)

++ I think Windows 10 mobile has learned many things from the Lumia Denim 8.1, but it is clearly a spectacular development (stability has been a problem, especially in the beginning, but we can be pleased that Microsoft has developed Windows 10 mobile) //

First, if you really want Mo ile to make a comeback is 10 has to go. Awful when compared to 8 (which is really what 10 is, with a different look).

Secondly, lose the Lumia name. Except for the 1520, not a flagship among them.
