Error 0x80070bc2 during installation KB4074588

So, now when I check update status, and check for updates, settings update says system is up to date.

Control panel programs and features shows KB4074588 installed today.

But the update history in settings update shows KB4074588 as awaiting restart. Before I did the SC command, it had shown KB4074588 as failed.

I confirm this works but with a "twist". 

On the use of the command prompt in administrator mode - you know this works because it says "success".

The "twist" has two parts (or did for me)

1. Expect several restarts - the first one after using the command prompt does not work, the second one does - and it goes into it automatically whatever your restart settings
2. The installed update screen is incorrect and tells you that you need to do another restart - not so - the message stays there irrespective of further restarts (screen dump attached)

You know that everything has worked because (i) your see the updates install and (ii) when you check for new updates it tells you that you are up to date.

Paul, thank you for the post this error has been driving me nuts as the  frequency or restarts the system was trying was increasing to about one every 2 hours.... Good that its now fixed and thank you.

If you are currently experiencing the 0x80070bc2 error while attempting to install KB4074588, please try this:

Using an Elevated Command Prompt (Admin) run this command:

SC config trustedinstaller start= auto

Then reboot the PC.

If anyone can confirm this resolves it for them, I would appreciate the feedback.

Your propsal solved the original problem, however my computer rebooted a second time without warning unexpectedly after putting in the command and rebooting.

Do I need to do something with the the configuration to avoid unexpected reboots later at other updates?
