Error 0x80070bc2 during installation KB4074588

OK, as I said originally, we are now at the point of wipe and reimage since the "easier" attempts failed to correct the issue. You will need to back up and files and data stored locally and be prepared to reinstall apps and programs. This isn't a quick process, but once complete, you should be fine.

Go to https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/surfacereco... (with a different Windows computer if yours is not working properly) and download a recovery image for your Surface. You will need a 16GB USB stick formatted FAT32. Unzip/extract the recovery zip to the formatted USB stick and then-

To reset your Surface from a USB recovery drive:

Step 1: Make sure your Surface is turned off and plugged in (hold down the power button for 30 seconds).

Step 2: Insert the USB recovery drive into the USB port on your Surface.

Step 3: Press and hold the volume-down button while you press and release the power button on your Surface.

Step 4: When the Surface logo appears, release the volume button.

Step 5: When prompted, select the language and keyboard layout you want.

Step 6: Select Troubleshoot > Reset your PC.

If prompted for a recovery key, select Skip this drive at the bottom of the screen.

Step 7: Select the target operating system you wish to reset. This refers to the current operating system installed on your Surface.

Step 8: Select Yes, repartition the drives, and on the next page, select Next.

Step 9: Choose Just remove my files.

Step 10: Select Reset.

Surface restarts and the Surface logo displays while the reset process continues (this can take a while).

After you complete the above, run winver to find out which build of Windows you have. If it is NOT 16299, go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-downlo... and select Update Now. Then we will continue normally from there.

Sorry about the pain and frustration. But the above will get things back to a good configuration.

fristly thankyou for your help. secondly sorry ,on my laptop there are many files and software ,and getting back up of files and reinstall softwares takes a lot of time .this method is very much for me .otherwise,nothing can be done? 

what is the problem if the windows version dose not change and os build 16299.125 is left?

I know this takes a lot of time, I've done it myself. But I found it to be worth it not only for the "fix" for a problem but because I found the system to be zippier and more responsive.

The latest cumulative update is https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/408984... - let's try something else

1. go to http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Sea... and download 2018-03 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4089848) - save it to yur Surface. Don't run it yet
2. disconnect from the Internet
3. Go to Settings, Updates, view installed updates and if it is showing, uninstall 4088776 (I know you said the issue says not installed).
4. restart
5. now run the MSU file you downloaded in step 1
6. restart and connect to Internet

run

winver and confirm you are running 16299.334

so if you have .334, it IS installed

I do all the steps but still my os build is 16299.125. i got caught up with this problem. please help me to fix this.

hello barb. i didn't do the way you said but it's a question. when i install the update security version KB4089848 security update, installation date of the 1601-01-01 is written to my surface. is this the reason for my problem, and if so how can i fix it? and os build still 16299.125

meanwhile,in the previous methods that you told me, there was no error in the command prompt.

there are a lot of people having issues with KB4089848 - at this point I suggest

you uninstall and block it and wait for the next cumulative update. I hate

recommending this, but the other options are a wipe and reinstall with no

guarantee that it won't occur again.
