(Update - 2/17 Editing for clarity based on feedback)

If you are currently experiencing the 0x80070bc2 error while attempting to install KB4074588, please try this:

  1. In the search box on the taskbar, type cmd.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt in the search results and select Run as administrator.  (Select Yes, when prompted by the User Account Control.)
  3. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the following command and press Enter:

SC config trustedinstaller start=auto 4. Restart the PC.

In some cases, a second restart may be required. If you look under Settings > Update & security and you see the message Status: Awaiting restart, restart the PC a second time to complete the installation.

PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> sc config trustedinstaller atart=auto

    two things:

    1. You are using powershell, where the author of the fix has mentioned a few times it needs to be run from an elevated CMD window. (there is a difference between the two)

    2)Typo in the command

     sc config trustedinstaller atart=auto

    should be :

     sc config trustedinstaller start=auto

Thank you so much.  This last month or so has been hell.  Have had to keep using system restore.  Could shut off, then start the computer again (usually), but if I gave the restart command, I would get the blue screen and after multiple restarts, diagnosing, then fixing common startup problems, none of which ever worked, I would have a few options, including system restore.  I have used system restore about 25 times in the last two months just to keep this computer running.  One of my computers is now dead because none of the options would work anymore, even to reset the pc.  On my main computer, I was having the same problems and more.  It would get an error with the latest windows update and then came the blue screen error again.  Your fix did the trick.  Now the update was successful, and I can restart again, without any more blue screen problems.  (On a third computer, my laptop, I had to reinstall windows because of this problem.  Sure wish I had found your fix sooner.)

    Sir,

    Which trick worked for you?

I am not a computer jock. So, please provide detailed instructions.

If there are spaces in the command, please clearly indicate where those spaces are.

There is absolutely no incentive for Microsoft to fix any of these problems.

The way Microsoft looks at these problems is, "Hey it is time for Windows 11 !".

Lets us proceed to rip-off the customers most of whom are sort of dumb anyway.

I don't understand why there are more applications being written for Linux.

I have a Linux computer. It has not crashed even once. No Antivirus needed.

The sooner Microsoft goes out of business, the safer will it be for the humanity.

Thanks for trying to help Tooney.  I am a photographer and really don't have time to try and sort out what Microsoft have obviously got a problem with.  Besides which, I don't really know what I am doing other than with Photoshop!  I have an IT guy back in the UK who will probably be able to sort this in a matter of minutes.  Thanks for trying.  Cheers, Chris
