(Update - 2/17 Editing for clarity based on feedback)

If you are currently experiencing the 0x80070bc2 error while attempting to install KB4074588, please try this:

  1. In the search box on the taskbar, type cmd.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt in the search results and select Run as administrator.  (Select Yes, when prompted by the User Account Control.)
  3. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the following command and press Enter:

SC config trustedinstaller start=auto 4. Restart the PC.

In some cases, a second restart may be required. If you look under Settings > Update & security and you see the message Status: Awaiting restart, restart the PC a second time to complete the installation.

    Paul...

Thank you Paul.  Although I came to your suggested solution late, it worked! The last successful cumulative update I had was on Feb 14 & I became aware of the problem on March 14. I am not a programmer or technical person but I've spent hours/days/weeks trying to find a fix.  I appreciate your post.

You can install the KB4074588 update from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

Microsoft has released the latest Cumulative Update for Windows 10. You can also consider installing the March 22, 2018—KB4089848 (OS Build 16299.334) update.

Let us know how it goes and we'll assist you further if needed.

I get the message, "This update does not apply to your computer".

My wife has an Apple computer.

She has had that computer for more than 3 years. Her computer does not experience any of these problems!

May be it is time to move away from Microsoft products.

PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> sc config trustedinstaller atart=auto

    two things:

    1. You are using powershell, where the author of the fix has mentioned a few times it needs to be run from an elevated CMD window. (there is a difference between the two)

    2)Typo in the command

     sc config trustedinstaller atart=auto

    should be :

     sc config trustedinstaller start=auto

    I did what you said.

    The message was: SUCCESS

However, it did not solve the problem.

I restarted the computer at least 10 times to no effect.

If you have anymore suggestions, I am eager to listen.

In searching the Internet, i came across a link pretending to be from Microsoft.

Unfortunately, it ended up charging my credit card $39.99.

The amount of grief Microsoft causes is incalculable.

I restored the computer to the date I bought this new computer. That wiped out all my purchased software.

Dealing with all these companies is a big problem.
