I have a HP laptop (Model: 15-ac121na) using Windows 10 Home and for the last 3months ive been having problems with very slow internet speed. I tried so many different solutions to no avail and eventually i come across a temporary fix of rolling back the driver of the network adapter to version 2023.4.720.2015 however every time i close the laptop or restart it the network adapter updates itself again. This situation is bearable but now suddenly i keep getting window assistant pop ups constantly trying to download 5GB of updates. After giving in on what seems like the 1000th attempt to stop it i let the updates install and upon logging into my laptop i noticed the internet speeds had dropped again, i tried to roll back the driver but the option is now greyed out and i was stuck with just 54kbps on version 2023.58.731.2017!! I uninstalled the updates by going back to the previous windows build and now everything is back to normal (me rolling back the driver every so often) but im still getting windows assistant pop ups trying to install even after i went to control panel and deleted the application!
If anyone could help me with either deleting the assistant permanently or even my dodgy speeds i would be very greatful.

After loosing 3 days with this one I was about to install linux on all my desktop !
Then a friend told me to just do a batch file that kill the process and wait for Microsoft to come to their senses !

It fails eveytime it tries to update to 1709, and after it fails then reverts to my previous version BUT EVERYTIME IT DOES THIS WINDOWS GETS MORE AND MORE DAMAGED, and sfc /scannow can not repair.
Windows 10 takes control away from users/owners. It is my computer, I can legally smash it against the wall if I want to, but I can not choose not to install updates!!!

This issue might be caused by corrupted downloaded update files. We'd like to know the error messages/codes you're getting.
In the meantime, we recommend that you follow the on-screen instructions provided on this support link on how to temporarily prevent Windows from installing updates.

I have the same problem only with version 1709 failing to load on a Surface Pro 4 (which is a MS product). It continually fails to install due to driver error. I believe the issue is that Windows 10, 1703 and `1709 have come to the point where there are just too many variables for MS to make new windows version that can update without a clean install. Meaning, they are at the point where it is impossible to handle all the loaded software and drivers on every person's different type of computer including MS's own hardware. So updating is only a 80% possibility. Clean installing is a pain for those of us who do run numerous programs and of course even MS office will think you are on a different computer when you do a clean install, so you better have your product keys handy. I managed to hold it at bay by using group edit.. But every so often I try using the MS update assistant. When I recently updated the update assistant, it appears they've turned it into somewhat of a virus in that you can't unistall it. It comes back and back and back. Task scheduler won't kill it. I'll try a few more things and then I may have to bite the bullet and do a clean install. The message here is don't use update assistant. If you already have, it's probably too late. Fortunately, my main computer is an Apple running Boot Camp and Parallels. I have been successful holding off 1709 through the group edit and I have not and won't run update assistant. If you think 1703 was tricky to update, wait until you try 1709.

What is the specific symptom for that? If it is a device that is not essential you may be able to remove it or disable it. Sometimes it is even necessary to uninstall supporting software. For example, I had to do that with printing support once to get an update installed.
