Windows 10 update freezes at 82% complete

Gateway SX 2851 Desktop has been trying to update to Win 10 version 1709 build 16299.98 from version 1703 build 15063.726. It started as a win 7.

This has happened with version 1607, 1703, 1709, 1803, 1809 (skipped), & 1903.

Every time the update runs it freezes at 82% complete. It will sit there for hours on the blue updating screen but the spinner is frozen. It appears there is no hard disk activity happening. My only choice at that point is to power-off the computer. When I re-power it and restart it attempts to recover the update and fails. It then reverts back to the previous version. 

This has happened 3 times now. I have uninstalled McAfee before the first attempt. I also uninstalled Easy Tether and Virtual Box. No other programs are running.

Any ideas from anybody?

Hi, Bill, I too, have had the exact same problems as you, even though I have an older computer, an Acer Aspire from 2011.. I found this in another thread:

I stumbled across a forum talking about problems with  Anatel  PCI-E Wlan cards (wi-fi) and old drivers that would hang up their computers and after removing the card (not just disabling) their machines would update and run fine. Since I was running my machine through an Ethernet connection, connected to an access point, I could remove the Anatel card in my computer and still have an internet connection. I tried it, and my computer a Gateway FX6860 updated to Windows 10 Fall Creators version without any problems.

Check to see if you have an Anatel wifi card and remove it and replace it with something newer or an Ethernet or usb connection to the internet and try the update. this worked for me.

I took out the Anatel Wi-Fi card and tried the updates again and they WORKED.

Pull out the PCIe Wireless card and run the update again. Wireless cards based on the RT3090 PCIe wireless card hang every Windows Update since the Creators update, including the Fall Creators Update and the April 2018 update. (1703, 1709, 1804)

    THANK YOU!!! After over a YEAR of frustration, DAYS of wasted time fruitlessly trying to get my Gateway PC to update from 1607 to 1703 or 1709 and then 1803 every time Microsoft would foist yet another variant of Update "Assistant" upon me or delay my workflow with an "Important Updates Needed" screen and forced launch of a web browser upon login, it would inevitably hang or fail somewhere along the line and require a revert to the previous version of Windows.

    I suspected there had to be some kind of underlying hardware conflict specific to my machine, but (silly me) figured that Microsoft would eventually identify and patch it somewhere along the line. No, after much time spent wading through these threads and finding only the stock responses "try disabling your AV", "create an ISO file," etc., I stumbled across this post. I opened the case, removed the Antatel wi-fi card and lo and behold, my computer successfully updated from 1607 to 1709. Interestingly, it didn't try to install 1803 even though it had been before with the most recent iteration of Update "Assistant."

    Thank you so Much, Bobroth1951 I have been fighting with this upgrade  on an older ASUS computer since it first came out and have tried multiple suggested solutions none of which worked. even did a clean reinstall only to re encounter the issue again a few days later. I just ran across your post that mentioned the anatel wi fi card, although my card was branded as an asus card apon closer inspection there was a small anatel sticker UNDER an ASUS parts # sticker.  I Pulled the wi fi card connected via lan cable and we are now finally completely updated to V1803 with all current updates and features, Thank you again for your post of this issue and the fix.

    It's unnerving that Microsoft hasn't fixed this particular issue in three consecutive feature updates, or that at the very least the installer doesn't warn you that this specific device will always prevent the update from completing.

    Right now it's an easily removable add-on card that halts the update, but what if it were an integrated device that couldn't be removed or disabled in the BIOS?
