Windows 10 update freezes at 82% complete

Gateway SX 2851 Desktop has been trying to update to Win 10 version 1709 build 16299.98 from version 1703 build 15063.726. It started as a win 7.

This has happened with version 1607, 1703, 1709, 1803, 1809 (skipped), & 1903.

Every time the update runs it freezes at 82% complete. It will sit there for hours on the blue updating screen but the spinner is frozen. It appears there is no hard disk activity happening. My only choice at that point is to power-off the computer. When I re-power it and restart it attempts to recover the update and fails. It then reverts back to the previous version. 

This has happened 3 times now. I have uninstalled McAfee before the first attempt. I also uninstalled Easy Tether and Virtual Box. No other programs are running.

Any ideas from anybody?

Hi, Bill, I too, have had the exact same problems as you, even though I have an older computer, an Acer Aspire from 2011.. I found this in another thread:

I stumbled across a forum talking about problems with  Anatel  PCI-E Wlan cards (wi-fi) and old drivers that would hang up their computers and after removing the card (not just disabling) their machines would update and run fine. Since I was running my machine through an Ethernet connection, connected to an access point, I could remove the Anatel card in my computer and still have an internet connection. I tried it, and my computer a Gateway FX6860 updated to Windows 10 Fall Creators version without any problems.

Check to see if you have an Anatel wifi card and remove it and replace it with something newer or an Ethernet or usb connection to the internet and try the update. this worked for me.

I took out the Anatel Wi-Fi card and tried the updates again and they WORKED.

Pull out the PCIe Wireless card and run the update again. Wireless cards based on the RT3090 PCIe wireless card hang every Windows Update since the Creators update, including the Fall Creators Update and the April 2018 update. (1703, 1709, 1804)

    I too found the problem of failed updates was caused by the Wi-Fi card in my PC (though posts on threads on this forum).

    I had my windows 1709 upgrade  failing at 45% (also failing at 75% and81% if upgrading via ISO disc) . I removed the Wi-Fi card and it upgraded ok on the next upgrade attempt.

    My Wi-Fi card on my Zoostorm PC showed Ralink in device manager ((Addon is also shown on the card itself & the model number of the Wi-Fi card  is NWP200Ev4). 

    Microsoft should have corrected this ,detect this in the upgrade or include it in any advice they give (spent quite a while trying to upgrade and lost some files from on one failed upgrade attempt where my PC locked out on a failed upgrade attempt (I managed to get my PC running again by disabling network devices (Wi-Fi card and LAN) in safe mode and then re-enabling them once I got back into normal windows). When I just disabled the Wi-Fi card it still failed to update , it only updated when I removed the card.  It might be advisable to have a static post on this forum with advice on upgrade problems to windows 1709  as at the moment you sometimes have to look through older posts to get some advice (also when you search forum posts you cant seem to order by date which can make it harder as well)

    Also noticed since upgrading to windows 1709  I now seem to have 8 wan miniport entries under network devices  which I have not noticed before

    I've been having the same exact problems as everyone else with the update freezing at 82% but only after I shut down the computer and turn it back on because the restart hangs. Is it safe to take out the wi-fi card? I don't have a anatel card and I don't have a replacement right now but it seems it's working for everyone else to just take it out. Why is it none of the troubleshooters and steps for this update identify this as a potential problem with the wi-fi card?  

    It may be worth giving it a go particularly if your PC is one of the PC manufacturers or Wi-Fi card manufacturers mentioned on this thread. You could perhaps have a look in device manager to see what make of card you have (and/or make of PC) and do a search or post on this forum to see whether anyone else has had the problem with that manufacturer

    If you do remove the card make sure the PC is powered down and if you can observe static precautions (e.g ground yourself before touching the PC card).

    I had my upgrade fail at 45% if through the normal windows update. If I created a iso upgrade disc to upgrade I found the pc was going to a black screen at about 75% then locking out , when I powered the pc down it recovered the installation but then it would fail at 75% or 81% (the spinning circle stopped , the pc locked out and it failed to recover the install on a power down (it then restored the old version of windows (Windows 1703))

    Thanks again, remaker...it was your original post about this issue that solved my problem also.  I might add that since then, I've had no such issues with any Windows updates.  I am currently at Insider build 17661.1001.
