Windows 10 update freezes at 82% complete

Gateway SX 2851 Desktop has been trying to update to Win 10 version 1709 build 16299.98 from version 1703 build 15063.726. It started as a win 7.

This has happened with version 1607, 1703, 1709, 1803, 1809 (skipped), & 1903.

Every time the update runs it freezes at 82% complete. It will sit there for hours on the blue updating screen but the spinner is frozen. It appears there is no hard disk activity happening. My only choice at that point is to power-off the computer. When I re-power it and restart it attempts to recover the update and fails. It then reverts back to the previous version.

This has happened 3 times now. I have uninstalled McAfee before the first attempt. I also uninstalled Easy Tether and Virtual Box. No other programs are running.

Any ideas from anybody?

Hi, Bill, I too, have had the exact same problems as you, even though I have an older computer, an Acer Aspire from 2011.. I found this in another thread:

I stumbled across a forum talking about problems with Anatel PCI-E Wlan cards (wi-fi) and old drivers that would hang up their computers and after removing the card (not just disabling) their machines would update and run fine. Since I was running my machine through an Ethernet connection, connected to an access point, I could remove the Anatel card in my computer and still have an internet connection. I tried it, and my computer a Gateway FX6860 updated to Windows 10 Fall Creators version without any problems.

Check to see if you have an Anatel wifi card and remove it and replace it with something newer or an Ethernet or usb connection to the internet and try the update. this worked for me.

I took out the Anatel Wi-Fi card and tried the updates again and they WORKED.

Pull out the PCIe Wireless card and run the update again. Wireless cards based on the RT3090 PCIe wireless card hang every Windows Update since the Creators update, including the Fall Creators Update and the April 2018 update. (1703, 1709, 1804)

I will likely replace the Anatel card with a newer one, but I have wanted to keep it for now just for curiosity's sake. It doesn't look like Anatel's newest driver made any difference for me and Microsoft certainly doesn't seem to think it's their problem.

I have permanently removed the wi-fi card. Mine upgraded ok to 1803 today with no installation problems (I think my wi-fi card may be the same manufacturer/share similarities as the Anatel Wi-Fi card) . The only problem I had was the 1803 upgrade download slowed up my entire internet connection and seemed to take quite a while (Microsoft should give more warning/control of the upgrade and give us the ability to pause the upgrade download once its started)

Win 10 1803 Update

After all my problems getting 1709 update to load and work correctly, I had ended up with a Win 10 1709 OS and my original Wi-Fi card working. Yes it is an Anatel Wi-Fi card. All subsequent updates for 1709 worked fine, no issues.

Four days ago (May 10, 2018) I got my first forced 1803 update. It happened overnight with no previous warnings that it was coming. I woke up to a powered down computer. On booting, I could see it was still updating. It did actually boot up and after I logged in it appeared that everything was working. All the programs that had been open reopened and there was no loss of data. Then I realized there was no sound. I checked in device manager and there were no issues reported with any of the sound settings. Everything sound related reported it was working correctly, but not a peep to be heard. I checked for changes in device manager and found no issues. I checked online for any reports and found a couple of other people reporting problems also. But nobody had a solution yet.

After spending half a day troubleshooting I rolled my computer back to an earlier date,. Everything went back to working correctly. All programs and apps played sound again.

This morning (May 14, 2018) while online, I received a popup telling me my computer was ready for an update. Since I wasn't involved in anything too important I shut down all my programs and initiated the restart myself.

I was able to watch it's update progress and at 75% I got the black screen freeze. After considerable time with no hard drive activity I powered down manually. At this point I went ahead and pulled the Anatel Wi-Fi card. I powered up the computer and it resumed the update. And finished the update. And booted up. And everything including sound was working.

Just for grins I shut down the computer and reinstalled the Anatel Wi-Fi card. I made sure to unhook the Ethernet line and rebooted. The first time I powered up I immediately got a black screen freeze. I powered off with the power button waited a bit and then powered up again. The computer booted up fully and the Anatel Wi-Fi card is operating. I am currently running Win 10, 1803 OS build 17134.48 with the original Anatel Wi-Fi card. Eveything is working.

I still maintain Win 10 is not a viable OS due to these issues. Until I see Microsoft address the issues that the people on these boards are painfully aware, I will not change my position.
