Windows 10 update freezes at 82% complete

Gateway SX 2851 Desktop has been trying to update to Win 10 version 1709 build 16299.98 from version 1703 build 15063.726. It started as a win 7.

This has happened with version 1607, 1703, 1709, 1803, 1809 (skipped), & 1903.

Every time the update runs it freezes at 82% complete. It will sit there for hours on the blue updating screen but the spinner is frozen. It appears there is no hard disk activity happening. My only choice at that point is to power-off the computer. When I re-power it and restart it attempts to recover the update and fails. It then reverts back to the previous version.

This has happened 3 times now. I have uninstalled McAfee before the first attempt. I also uninstalled Easy Tether and Virtual Box. No other programs are running.

Any ideas from anybody?

Hi, Bill, I too, have had the exact same problems as you, even though I have an older computer, an Acer Aspire from 2011.. I found this in another thread:

Quote:

I was having a similar problem, and after multiple attempts (over 7 times) trying different solutions like disabling virus protection, disabling startup programs, running update database corruption repair, etc. My computer never got past 81% before freezing and not updating.

I stumbled across a forum talking about problems with  Anatel  PCI-E Wlan cards (wi-fi) and old drivers that would hang up their computers and after removing the card (not just disabling) their machines would update and run fine. Since I was running my machine through an Ethernet connection, connected to an access point, I could remove the Anatel card in my computer and still have an internet connection. I tried it, and my computer a Gateway FX6860 updated to Windows 10 Fall Creators version without any problems.

Check to see if you have an Anatel wifi card and remove it and replace it with something newer or an Ethernet or usb connection to the internet and try the update. this worked for me.

I took out the Anatel Wi-Fi card and tried the updates again and they WORKED.

Pull out the PCIe Wireless card and run the update again. Wireless cards based on the RT3090 PCIe wireless card hang every Windows Update since the Creators update, including the Fall Creators Update and the April 2018 update. (1703, 1709, 1804)

After the second time it got stopped at 82% I started pulling all attached USB accessories. No change. I then pulled the SD card (used as memory cache). Within 5 seconds there was hard drive activity and Fresh Start completed in 5 minutes.

It has been working well with no new issues.

    Win 10 1903 update:

I decided to do the 1903 update on my own terms. This was not a forced update. I never was forced the 1809 update on my Gateway computer, so it was still running 1803. I decided to use the update assistant method by going to the Microsoft update page online found here:

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

and using the update now button. This downloaded the update assistant. When I got that installed on my desktop I clicked it and it said it was setting up. It then said my computer was compatible with Win 10 and started downloading the update. That took about 45 minutes. Once it had downloaded the update it told me to restart my computer. After the restart, it told me it was installing and not to shut off the computer. It also said the computer would restart several times and that it would take some time to complete.

Due to my history with Win 10 updates on this computer, I was not at all surprised when the update reached 75% and I got a black screen freeze with no hard drive activity.  I went ahead and powered down manually by holding the main power button for 5 seconds. At this point, I removed the Wi-Fi card.

When I repowered the computer it continued the update with no more problems through 100%. at that point, it shut down and restarted on its own. It then went to the log in screen. After logging in it went to the HI screen and did some more installing. Once again it said to not to shut off the computer. after a bit more time it did finally bring up my Desktop screen. All told I would say the process took just under 2 hours for this computer. Quite a bit faster than the two laptops I updated to 1903. You can see my experience with those updates here:

Sharing is caring: how long did it take you to install the Windows 10 May 2019 Update (1903)

Once the Desktop was fully booted up on my desktop screen I shut it down and reinstalled my original Wi-Fi card again. This time the computer booted with no issues and the Wi-Fi card was working with no issues.

I have had no issues with Win 1903 (other than the regular installation freeze).

Computer freezes at 82% on Windows 10 updates.

The same thing happened to me multiple times.  So frustrating.  I fixed it today.

My computer is a Gateway DX4860.  The built in Wi Fi card attached to the

motherboard according to Gateway and Microsoft is not compatible with

the new Windows software.  This has happened within the past few months.

I disabled the built in Wifi Card and purchased and installed a Wireless Wifi Card.

I am now FINALLY able to download and install all of the latests updates.

Apparently it was the Wifi card that Gateway has not chosen to upgrade.
