Windows 10 update freezes at 82% complete

Gateway SX 2851 Desktop has been trying to update to Win 10 version 1709 build 16299.98 from version 1703 build 15063.726. It started as a win 7.

This has happened with version 1607, 1703, 1709, 1803, 1809 (skipped), & 1903.

Every time the update runs it freezes at 82% complete. It will sit there for hours on the blue updating screen but the spinner is frozen. It appears there is no hard disk activity happening. My only choice at that point is to power-off the computer. When I re-power it and restart it attempts to recover the update and fails. It then reverts back to the previous version. 

This has happened 3 times now. I have uninstalled McAfee before the first attempt. I also uninstalled Easy Tether and Virtual Box. No other programs are running.

Any ideas from anybody?

Hi, Bill, I too, have had the exact same problems as you, even though I have an older computer, an Acer Aspire from 2011.. I found this in another thread:

I tried it, and my computer a Gateway FX6860 updated to Windows 10 Fall Creators version without any problems.

Check to see if you have an Anatel wifi card and remove it and replace it with something newer or an Ethernet or usb connection to the internet and try the update. this worked for me.

I took out the Anatel Wi-Fi card and tried the updates again and they WORKED.

Pull out the PCIe Wireless card and run the update again. Wireless cards based on the RT3090 PCIe wireless card hang every Windows Update since the Creators update, including the Fall Creators Update and the April 2018 update. (1703, 1709, 1804)

    OMG all the time and fighting to get this fixed. I have been fighting this for well over 2 months with an older Gateway computer. Even a complete save off and ground up system restart and right back to the same issue! Still worked great and suited the family needs but the Updates and freezing at 81% over and over and over...

    Hard to believe it was the wireless network card causing this problem. Version 1607 with Cumulative Update 1709...

    Removed the Anatel Wireless card (didn't say Anatel in the device manager) and plugged into the router directly and updates ran perfectly all the way to the latest Windows 10 Creators and then the 1709 Cumulative first try - now all up to date! Will install a new card (so I don't have to wire in a new network outlet). Thanks to Bob and all that posted enough to get the true issue to appear in a web search! I have tried many other things on the MS blog but nothing worked. Can't even stop the update from trying

    • over and over and over and over every day.

    I was ready to drop $700 for a new tower, already in the cart! Now an evening of effort and a new Asus PCE-AC51 wireless AC750 card ($29.00 Amazon) and no need for a new computer! Fantastic!

    I've had this problem since the update was launched and must have read through hundreds of ideas on how to tackle the problem, tried all of them and to no avail. I have wasted  a lot of time over this issue. Why doesn't MS take a lead on some of these issues?

    You sir, are an absolute genius!  I've been fighting this for months and have tried all kinds of methods to try to get past 82% in this update. Then when those didn't work, I was working through blocking the update. But MS was forcing the update and I was stuck in a update/reboot loop daily for the past month. I pulled the unused WiFi card out, which was made by Anatel but ID'd by Windows as Microtech, crossed my fingers and ran the update.

    It ran smooth with no major issues.  Windows decided to wipe the email account from Windows Mail for some reason, but that's not a big deal.
